Botulinum toxin type A is a protein that manages to block muscle contraction. Its most common use in aesthetic medicine is to treat wrinkles in the upper third of the face:
- Frown lines
- Forehead wrinkles
- Periocular wrinkles (‘crow’s feet’)
- Lines caused by raising eyebrows
- Nasal bridge wrinkles (‘bunny lines’)
The duration of effect varies depending on different factors. In general we can consider that from three – four months after its application the patient begins to notice more muscle movement, and that from six months onwards, he or she has almost normal muscle contraction.
If administered by a properly trained and experienced practitioner on a suitable patient, using a good technique, adverse effects of this treatment are very rare and serious effects are limited, plus possible bruising minimised.
