Last October, at the ‘Salon Guía Peñín de los Mejores Vinos de España’ – Spain’s most important wine fair – we unexpectedly met a new Mallorcan winemaker. We had thought we knew all the wineries on the island; obviously not. A young bodega gets maximum ratings for three of its four wines. That sounds exciting. We get to know the owner and wine lover José Antonio González in a superb visit. With Ca’n Xanet he has fulfilled a lifelong dream. Full-time hotelier and travelling the world, he discovered a piece of land in the north of the island, in the bay of Pollença. He wanted to build his house here. He changed his mind, growing two acres of grape vines instead.
With less than 10,000 bottles, he runs a rather small production. Great attention is placed on manual labour and careful selection of grapes to achieve the desired results. The four wines all have a lot of potential for long-term success. Sibila is a recommendation for real connoisseurs. It is a rare pure-grade Gorgollassa. One wine blogger called the grape “uva rara” – bizarre grape. It’s not for novices – only for the true wine connoisseurs who are looking for something special. It may be assumed that this is a new rising bodega star, who stands apart from the other ‘young and wild’.

Black and red colours welcome us in the glass. The colour is so masculine that one is surprised by the feminine bouquet: elegant, delicate, fine, and a sweet smell of licorice and berries. But then the power of Syrah comes out of nowhere! It´s shaking the senses. Power and finesse are in a race in which there is no winner.
An interesting ‘piñata’ for connoisseurs.

50% Merlot, 26% Syrah, 9% Callet, 9% Manto Negro & 6% Gorgollassa.
Ca’n Xanet shines dark red in the ‘copa’. The captivating bouquet contains the seductive scent of a Cuban cigar, refined by oak. The lush body of the wine fills the mouth. Excellent balance! The long finish is exceptional. This wine likes to mature in the bottle some more time.

Is this a Pinot Noir? Almost transparent ruby colours shine in the wine glass. No, it is juice from the island grape Manto Negro. The reflections remind us of a gemstone. An elegant bouquet arises in nose and mouth. Hints of dark fruits combine with mineral notes. This noble crop of winemaking allures us with a silky sheen. The aftertaste lasts several minutes! This complex wine may even be served with Mediterranean fish.
The 2011 vintage was awarded the highest points of all Mallorcan wines by Guía Peñin: 94/100. The 2012 is also deserving.
