Only three of the 50 employees who work for German medicinal plants guru Prof. Michael Popp are of German descent. But everything here is firmly in German hands. The guided tour leads us from the vineyard to the bodega, with the wine press, towards the tasting room. The “good old well-known German virtues” are immediately present: everything is clean, tidy, and well organized. Nothing is left to chance. Young German winemaker Thomas Wambsganss has been working in the company for 10 years now and he is largely responsible for the product range.
With ‘Stairway to Heaven’ he has created a best seller for German fans only. Almost every German wine lover on the island gives ‘Stairway to Heaven’ the prize for the most beloved Mallorcan wine. Many things are different at Castell Miquel. The bottles are regularly sold out. It is the only producer on the island with glass bottle tops – for Spanish wineries unthinkable, but a trendy highlight for German customers. All vines are said to be grown organically. But the wines are not officially certified as such – due to a difficult choice within the range of organic seals.
The currently very popular local grape varieties are not grown at Castell Miquel. “Our varieties suit our soil and there are no truly indigenous varieties on Mallorca after all. The Romans brought the wine to the island.”
Stairway to Heaven Cabernet Sauvignon 2010
100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Light violet reflections in the glass. The scent is a benchmark for Cabernet Sauvignons matured in oak barrels: aromas of blackcurrant and herbs, slightly animalistic. On the palate it is a marriage of fruit and wood with a strong spiciness; well done by the winemaker. Short but crispy finish.
Great Mallorcan Cabernet, competing with cheaper products at stores.
Stairway to Heaven Shiraz 2010
A red shimmering, almost black-purple, surprises us in the glass. The bouquet has fantastic notes of blackberry, blueberry, and plum. The palate opens a book from which you want to read. Fruity, fresh and very subtle notes surprise. A very balanced aftertaste completes the impression!
A very complex island Syrah.
