Balearic Day ceremonies

Friday, February 26th, 2010

On Monday, 1st of March, the residents of the Balearic Islands celebrate their autonomy declaration

Several events are organized over the weekend before this festivity. It kicks off on Friday, February, 26, with the traditional and culture markets at the Passeig Sagrera and Plaza Drassans and an exhibition opening at the Chapel at the Consolat de la Mar

Balearic Government National Day Concert Schedule

On February 28th from 20:00 until 23:55 hours the official National Day concert will take place at Parc de Ses Voltes. This year the group formed the lineup of Formentera "4 de copes" and the Mallorcan Reboster Alma Sonora and is repeating the second consecutive year. The schedule for the concert of the Balearic Government National Day this Sunday, February, 28 is as follows:

The first group will be "4 de copes" which will perform at 20:00 sharp. Then Alma Sonora start at 21:15. The last group is Reboster starting its performance at 22:30 and 23:45. At the end of the DJ Spider livens up until 00:30.

Financial cuts

This year, the economic crisis but also leaves its mark at the ceremony. 250,000 euros are available for the "Day of the Balearic Islands" – 500,000 euros less than in the previous year. In 2007 the costs of the 1st March went up to 1.5 million euros. This year, the "Day of the Balearic Islands" falls together with the 200-year anniversary of composer Frédéric Chopin. Many activities are therefore also linked with his person.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE 2010 CHOPIN FESTIVAL

A further innovation of this year’s "Day of the Balearic Islands" is also that the program will vary according to every Balearic island.

The Day of the Balearic Islands, known as National Day of the Balearic Islands is the official holiday of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands, which is celebrated every year on the 1st of March, in commemoration of the date in which the Statute of Autonomy entered into force in 1983, which is also the same as the new Statute of Autonomy of 2007.

Currently, Article 6.3 of the Statute of Autonomy of the Balearic Islands 2007 establishes March 1 as the Festival of the Balearic Islands.

Restaurante Jardin a garden of eden for gourmets

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Restaurante Jardin Puerto Alcudia

RESTAURANTE JARDÍN in Puerto Alcudia is being hotly-tipped for a coveted Michelin
star; abcMallorca went to find out why.

It would be Mallorca’s first for a restaurant with a woman head chef – Macarena de Castro (28). The family-owned Restaurante Jardín and its catering division, in Puerto Alcudia, are managed by brother Daniel de Castro. Situated in a quiet residential street, off the main Alcudia to Artà road, the restaurant feels a world away from the area’s tourist eateries.

The romantic garden is perfect for summer dining, but indoors there’s a spacious contemporary dining room upstairs (accessible by lift or stairs, and available for private events). Modern art by Antonio de Castro (the siblings’ uncle) and attractive Menestràlia glass lights decorate the room.

Restaurante Jardin Puerto Alcudia

Mallorca-born Macarena has been cooking here for eight years. She studied Fine Arts for a year, then attended UIB hotel school. Her learning continues: when Restaurante Jardín closes in the low season, this dynamic young chef heads for the kitchens of culinary giants, in Michelin-starred restaurants, such as Wylie Dufresne (WD-50, New York); Jean Coussau (Relais de la Poste in Landes, France), and Andoni Luis Aduriz at San Sebastian’s two-star Mugaritz (the world’s fourth best restaurant).

Her culinary style? "It’s complicated to explain," she said. "I take traditional Mallorcan or Mediterranean dishes and put my signature on them." Her "cocina de autor" is rooted in tradition, flavour, and finest local ingredients (favourites are olive oil and garlic).

There are two changing tasting menus: Menú Pollentia (45€ – appetiser and four courses) and Talaia (65€ – appetiser and seven courses), although individual dishes can be selected. The wine list is extensive, so sommelier and maître d’ Sergio Marquez’s expertise is useful (his choices are shown below). For 24 euros, several different wines are served by the glass. All prices exclude IVA.

After warm home-made bread rolls – one tomato, one olive – with virgin olive oil and four varieties of Flor de Sal, we had the appetiser of the day. "Ortiguilla de Mar" was served with a touch of wit, in what looked like an oval sardine can – with ring-pull top. No ring-pulling was necessary: one lifted the lid to reveal two tastily seasoned pieces of Pulpo a la Gallega. It was accompanied by a fried sea anemone – a crisp, light and exquisite taste of the sea.

Restaurante Jardin Puerto Alcudia

"Gazpacho de Cerezas con Bogavante a la parilla" was an additional course for our review. The chilled cherry soup was carefully poured at the table around pieces of lobster in large white bowls – a colourful, delicious contrast of velvety smooth gazpacho, meaty lobster and crunchy tiny croutons. (Mortitx Blanc 2008 – 23€).

The melt-in-the-mouth "Atún Marinado con Soja, nieve de ‘Salmorejo’ y Quinoa" featured inspirational touches of wasabi ice cream and tiny black cubes of gelatine of soya and was served on square black plates, with a "chupito" of Campari and orange. (Jaume Mesquida’s Rosat de Rosa 2008 – 24€).

The star of "Calamar a la plancha con cremoso de Patata y reducción de Cítricos" was the silky creamed potato, with its citrus hint. (Quíbia Callet Prensal Blanc, Falanis 2008 – 22€).

"Polvo de ajo" was the unusual accompaniment to the plump serrano-wrapped prawn tail of "Delicias de Ibérico con Gambas 2009". This technique for this garlic powder, which turns to oil when in contact with other ingredients, was created by Ferran Adrià. Macarena recommended sucking the tasty juices from the prawn’s head. (Barranc dels Glosos 2008 Priorat – 24€).

Next came perfectly-cooked sea bass, small crisp pieces of courgette, mangetouts and fennel bulb, and a tangy vegetable-based sauce ("Lubina asado con verduritas al hinojo"). Macarena, unlike many Mallorcans, uses fennel as a vegetable. (Macia Batle’s Blanc de Blancs 2008 – 23€).

The meat course "Ventresca de Cordero con Coliflor y Bombón de Ajo y Membrillo" starred 12-hour roasted belly of lamb – a cut not favoured by many chefs. It was exceptionally tender and contrasted well with the crunchy tiny cauliflower florets and almonds, and smooth "bombón". (A superb wine for a superb dish: the Butxet Merlot de Son Claret 2006 from Mallorca’s Pla y Llevant won bronze award at last year’s Premios Mezquita – 22€).

Restaurante Jardin Puerto Alcudia

Our two desserts were traditional, with a twist. "Tarta de ‘lemon pie’", served cold on a swash of rich dark chocolate sauce, had a crunchy crumb for textural interest. You’d never want traditional lemon meringue pie again! (Gramona’s Vi de Gel Riesling Muscat 2008 from Penedes, 4€ a glass). The other was Macaren’s take on Mallorca’s ubiquitous almond cake "Gato con cremoso de Albaricoque con crujiente de Frambuesa". Its crisp brandy snap was particularly moreish.

The carefully balanced menu left just enough room for coffee, over which we reflected on the exceptional restaurant that Daniel, Macarena and their dedicated team have created – and the Michelin star that will surely come their way.

studio weill

Daniel Libeskind is one of the world’s leading architects, who designed the iconic Jewish Museum in Berlin and was chosen to redevelop Ground Zero in New York. Not many people know, however, that overlooking the sea near Puerto Andratx he designed the home and studio where sculptor, Barbara Weill, has worked for 35 years. It’s the only domestic project he’s ever done, and already on the worldwide itinerary of curious architecture students.

balloon trips mallorca

Without a doubt, this is the very best way of seeing the island. Illes Balears Ballooning runs flights all year round. It is not just a balloon flight, it’s a time travel with dinner and champagne on board. Forget the pool, the sheer romance of floating 2,000 feet over such a magnificent coastline is virtually indescribable …

The real Mallorca

the real mallorca

Mallorca is one of the most beautiful and fascinating islands in the Mediterranean – but for too many of Mallorca’s visitors its charms remain hidden, laments Ingrid Browning.

It’s high Summer. I’m sitting on a dappled terrace in the centre of picturesque Sóller on the north-west coast of Mallorca, savouring the silky-smooth ice-cream made just a few metres away with oranges and lemons grown in this very valley – and thinking: this is the life!
As I consider trying out a few more of the 40 – yes 40 – fantastic flavours, or perhaps moving on to the sorbets, it occurs to me that this friendly little artisanal ice cream factory, Sa Fabrica de Gelats, is one of those hidden gems that typifies what visitors to Mallorca miss when they spend their holiday lolling by the pool.

I should say first of all that I’m by no means a purist when it comes to holidays. I’m certainly not a believer that the only way to see your chosen destination is to work your way religiously through eight different “target locations” a day – four each morning and afternoon, without fail.

On the other hand, I’m positively evangelical when it comes to Mallorca: I simply can’t bear the thought that so many visitors fly in and out every year without marvelling at the majesty of the Sierra de Tramuntana, sipping a glass or two of wine as the sun sets over the fishing boats at Cala Figuera, or soaking up the atmosphere in the late Joan Miro’s studio in Palma, untouched since his death at the age of 90.

In fact, not only do they not do any of those three wonderful things, which come to me off the top of my head. Often they don’t even do the most blindingly obvious things, such as visiting Palma’s fabulous gothic cathedral – La Seu – despite the fact that it dates back to 1230 and dominates the city’s skyline.

So, what can I do to play my part in making sure that Summer 2009 is the summer as many visitors as possible move beyond the poolside and enjoy the many delights of La Isla de la Calma.

Well, I can start by listing my own Top Ten favourite places and things, and hope that some of my enthusiasm rubs off. We’ll take it that everyplace I’ve already mentioned has already been included in your new itinerary. So here’s the rest …

cool areas mallorca

Santa Catalina
Behind the promenade, near "Real Club Náutico" and Paseo Marítimo, it´s one of Palma´s most characterful districts. It´s famous for the historic market place "Mercat de Santa Catalina" – its market rights have been established since 1249 – and for the buzz around it. Local residents and chefs from the numerous surrounding gourmet restaurants come here to shop daily for fresh ingredients.

Paseo Marítimo

Palma´s celebrated party zone, which begins at "Real Club Náutico" and extends to "Club de Mar" (some three kilometres). Nightbirds can find almost everything they might desire: Salsa clubs, pubs, restaurants, chic dance clubs ("Tito´s", "Abraxas", "King Kamehameha"), fast food takeaways, et cetera.

Portixol
Portixol is romantically situated on the outskirts of Palma, halfway to Arenal. In former times it was a gipsy district and a harbour for fishermen, nowadays it´s a trendy place for strolling and having dinner. One picturesque restaurant after another invites you to stop. The town´s best seafood is served in Portixol. Furthermore there are two recommendable city beaches in Es Molinar: Can Pere Antoni and Playa Portixol, some metres behind the yacht port.

Puerto Portals
Planned in 1932 on a drawing-board, Puerto Portals is today THE luxury-place on the island and a haven for the “cool set”. Naturally, Mallorca´s most decorated restaurant "Tristán" (2 Michelin stars) is located here, along with other top gastronomy brands like Flanigan, Cappuccino, Ritzi Lounge, La Concha, Titanic. Luxury fashion boutiques tempt the visitor to enter. With a little bit of luck, you could be dining next to Spain´s King Juan Carlos, Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia, in August, when regattas like "Breitling" and "Copa del Rey" take place.

Cool beaches in Mallorca

beaches Mallorca

Mallorca offers many great beaches and secluded coves. Here, we present you a selection of the coolest beaches in Mallorca:

Cala Agulla:
A beautiful beach surrounded by pine trees and mountains, situated in the municipality of Capdepera, about 80 kilometres from Palma de Mallorca. The water here is sparklingly clean and appears wonderfully light blue, making it the perfect place for swimming and to practise marine sports. Well-connected by pedestrian paths to Cala Mesquida, and along the way you pass neighbouring Cala Moltó, frequented by naturists. Snack bar and a pay-to-park area. Take the Manacor road to Capdepera and then head for Cala Rajada.

Cala Torta, Estreta, Mitjana
Cala Torta is one of the most appealing undeveloped beaches on Mallorca. Scuba-diving and snorkelling are highly recommended in this area. All of these three beaches are quite remote so be prepared for a bumpy ride through a small mountain range. They are some of the most unspoilt beaches on the island, though if you head for Cala Torta, there’s a small beach bar open in peak season. Directions: Drive out of Artà on the road to Capdepera and the beaches are signed on a small road on the left just past a petrol station.

Bahia de Pollensa:

Many consider the long stretch of Playa de Llenaire to be the best beach on Mallorca, situated within a wonderful bay. Lots of poets and painters have been inspired by Puerto de Pollensa.

Cala Mesquida, near Capdepera:
The magnificent Mesquida bay lies six kilometres to the north of Cala Rajada and its open views make it one of the most beautiful in the north-east of the island. It has various facilities for beach visitors. A watchtower atop a small mountain looks down over the more built-up end of the beach. The fine white sands make it great for relaxing or walking, and this is one of the few beaches where surfers can often catch a wave.

Cala Millor
The stretch of beach between Cala Millor and Cala Bona is sandy and one of the best on the east coast of Mallorca. It is a kilometre-and-a-half long and backed by a promenade perfect for walking, cycling, browsing the gift shops or taking refreshments in one of the many cafés, bars or restaurants. This promenade will take you all the way to the fishing harbour at Cala Bona. The sea is initially shallow and quite safe – appropriate for children.

Es Trenc between Sant Jordi and Ses Covetes
Over 5 kilometres of white sandy beach backed by sand dunes. The water is turquoise and the beach has a real Caribbean feel. It does get busy in peak season with all the locals. Directions: Drive through Campos following signs to Santanyí. Immediately after leaving Campos there is sign on your right to Es Trenc.

Cala Varques
One for those who don’t like to share the beach with too many others! On the east coast, near the Calas de Mallorca, it’s not easy to find – which is part of its attraction. Park in a lane, and pass through large metal gates to take the 15 minute walk through pines down to the cove. You’ll be rewarded with clear turquoise waters and tranquillity, but may be sharing the sands with a few naturists – and, possibly, the odd curious bull!
