On the road between Sa Pobla and Alcúdia lies the entrance to the designer finca Son Simó Vell. One finds here – against all expectations – a small oasis of peace for the soul. After passing the impressive gate one enters a different world. On both the left- and right-hand sides of the entrance extends an accurately scaled vineyard. Before you reach the charming country house hotel, you will pass the small, new bodega. For the owner Sebastian Canyelles Batle, viticulture is anything but new territory. The co-founder of Macià Batle fulfilled a long-held dream after leaving this well-known bodega. Together with his wife Jero they bought an old ‘possessió’, lovingly renovated it and opened an Agroturismo Hotel. But that’s not enough.
Celler Canyelles i Batle
On the 98-acre finca, some 3,7 acres are planted with vines of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. With annual production of 4,800 bottles of the finest red wine, this is one of the smallest wineries on Mallorca. After selling grapes to other bodegas in recent years, Celler Canyelles i Batle now offers its first self-produced wine. Sebastian gets support and advice from his old friend, the winemaker Ramón Vaca. He also works for Bodega Macià Batle. The 2011 debut carries the alluring name ‘Pecat’, which means ‘sin’ in Mallorcan. A name like ‘sweet seduction’ of the palate would have been even better. One thing is clear: Good wine can do no wrong!
35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot & 25% Shiraz.
Not really a ‘new wine’ in the glass, although it is a first vintage. Colours reflect in cherry red. The fruity aroma mixes cherry, raspberry, and currant nuances, but also hints of coffee and dark chocolate. Light tannins lead the way to a beautiful finish. A wine with a great future!
