Driving to the Son Caliu Oasis Spa I cursed myself for making a Monday morning appointment. There seemed a-million-and-one things that needed sorting out and, as a result, I felt tense and agitated. But, as I entered the Spa, the air of calm and the wafts of sweet incense immediately put things into relaxing perspective. After all, isn’t time a man-made measurement and what are a few hours of enjoyment when you need it?As if to prove the point, I bumped straight into four island residents who were celebrating a birthday with a girlie day’s pampering. They looked wonderfully relaxed in their cosy bathrobes as they celebrated with glasses of champagne. After a tour of the facilities that include super-size, indoor swimming pool with whirlpool and water-jets, a fitness room, gym and a relaxation area with heated waterbeds, I was left to sample the thermal circuit. So I started with a long, slow swim and spent a good ten minutes enjoying the invigorating force of the water-jets playing on my shoulders.
The only other person in the pool was a friendly British lady, who told me she had started coming to the Spa every day in an effort to shed some of the weight she had put on during a wet and miserable summer in the UK. “I felt I had lost my confidence and need somewhere quiet and friendly, so I can get myself back into shape,” she confided.Although the Son Caliu Spa has already been open a year, it still smells and looks brand new and seems to be something of a “best-kept secret” with locals, who regularly use the facilities.
After my swim I enjoyed an hour alternating between the steam baths, laconium, sauna and the ‘experience’ showers.
It was hard to choose a favourite, but I felt the salt inhalation did help my tight chest. Then, following a leisurely cup of green tea, it was time to head to one of the eight treatment rooms for a short sample therapy. All treatments rooms have their own showers and are tastefully decorated in neutral, calming shades. And two are specially designed for couples to enjoy their treatments together.
Multilingual Spa manager Katrin Volkmann suggested I try the Bio-Release Scalp Massage (35 euros for 30 minutes) as she said it is one of their most popular. This western-style massage promotes well-being and revitalises biological energies that are diminished, because of the pressures of work and tension in general. Concentrating on the face, scalp and nape of the neck, this massage gently melts away muscular tensions and imbalances. And I particularly appreciated the fact that my feet were adjusted and my body aligned and relaxed before work on my scalp began. This holistic way of providing treatment is in keeping with the philosophy of Gertraud Gruber, whose 100 percent natural range of beauty products is used in the Spa. The accepted wisdom is that you cannot treat one body part in isolation and that, for best effect, you should pamper body, soul and spirit at the same time.
After 20 minutes I was indeed in a deep state of relaxation and felt sure I would have been sound asleep if the therapeutics had continued longer. By now all thoughts of phone calls to be answered, shopping to be done, builders to be managed and deadlines to be met were long forgotten. And, instead of rushing home as I had intended to do, I went to lie down and calmly contemplate the week ahead from the comfort of one of the heated water beds in the relaxation area.I left calm, refreshed and glowing. Thanks to the Son Caliu Spa I have found a new way to beat those Monday blues!
