The medical standard is good and the centres and hospitals of Mallorca are of recent construction and are thus equipped to modern standards. Unfortunately, many a tourist and resident in Mallorca needs to revert to them, but be warned: some patience is needed as the Seguridad Social is responsible for all citizens. In the nineties doctors from abroad started to move to Mallorca and began to open surgeries here. Most of them came from Germany and the UK and at the moment there are more than 100 foreign doctors registered on the island. We recommend inquiring prior to your visit whether the cost of the medical examination and treatment will be fully or partly covered, directly at the doctors as well as with your private or social security provider.
The doctors represent most medical fields, but we will focus on the general practitioners in this report.
General practitioners and internists examine the heart, lungs and kidneys. ECGs are carried out at the doctor’s surgeries, blood pressure is taken, lung function measured, laboratory tests are conducted and inoculations administered. That’s the standard. However, when choosing a GP, additional qualifications are often important, such as whether the practitioner offers alternative medicine or whether he specialises in one particular field. The following article describes the specialities and additional training of some of the GPs and internists who are practising on Mallorca. All German doctors listed also speak English.
