Opened in 1998, it’s part of a substantial 17th century estate; the mansion was originally the American owner’s family home, which he sympathetically and stylishly converted.
Facilities include 31 spacious bedrooms and suites (with superb bathrooms) – each named after a prominent person in Mallorca’s history, elegant bar, chimney lounge (log fires in the winter), and Oleum fine-dining restaurant, in the former olive press. The estate produce is used in the hotel, and there’s also a vineyard of the local Malvasia grape variety.
Achingly gorgeous views – and original paintings and sculptures by Hockney, Chagall, Stella, Ben and Yannick Jakober, and others.
Outside there are well-tended gardens with manicured hedges, 30-metre pool – surrounded by private cabanas – and poolside El Gazebo for lunch. Beauty and therapeutic treatments are offered in ‘La Fuente’ by Jeanne Lurie, who’s also a yoga master and Pilates teacher.
Condé Nast Johansen’s ‘Most Excellent Hotel in Europe and the Mediterranean’ 2013 offers a relaxed ambience and attentive service.
