Six years, considerable patience, and a labour of love went into creating this unique British-owned 9-bedroom hotel, which opened in late spring within the old walled town of Alcúdia. Mark Worthington had first seen the property in 2009, when parts of the neglected former manor house – dating back to the 15th century – had been empty for more than 300 years. In spite of its dilapidated state, Worthington had the vision to see its potential to become a well-located boutique hotel.

The tower at the heart of the building is believed to date back to 1467; the basement stone wine vat – now restored and a feature within the hotel – pre-dates the house. What is now the open central courtyard (with spa pool and chill-out area), 20 metres below street level, was home to almost three centuries’ worth of bricks, roof slates, and general rubble, when the Worthington family acquired the property.
Work on the project began early in 2010 and it took a year to clear the rubble (and nesting pigeons) and another year to render the site safe. Work on restoring and renovating the Gothic architecture of the tower – which had not been accessed within living memory – then started.
The entire building project was overseen by family friend and developer David Riutort and his business partner Toni Pérez, and David’s cousin completed the architectural design works. Such a sensitive project involved the archaeological team of the local council, to ensure the restoration was carried out to the required standards.
The final stage in the creation of the stylish boutique Hotel Can Mostatxins was completed by the hotel’s managers, Peter Markham and Rudolph Olivier – whose eye for design and keen attention to detail have successfully blended chic contemporary furniture and accessories with restored original architectural features.
