Jaume is the part-time winemaker of Finca Can Veri near Biniali. In 1996, he bought this piece of land in order to live here and to recover from his busy working life. Jaume is actually an enthusiastic restaurateur. His restaurant in mountain village Orient, after which it is named, is well known beyond the borders of the island for its suckling pig.
Anyone who wants to eat there on a Sunday must make a reservation weeks in advance. Some wines can be found only here. And this is the reason for our visit: Jaume gives us a special wine – his own wine. He already had the vineyards for it; a clever marketing strategy. A tour through his winery reveals some dusty magnums wrapped with packing tape. “These are for my granddaughter’s 18th birthday, my first vintage!” Jaume proudly tells us. He also introduces us to the Mallorcan living room. A wine sampling is a must for everyone here at the house. Jaume brings very cold bottles to be tasted, warming them in front of the open fireplace. Red wine needs the perfect temperature.
Bread, homemade olive oil, homemade cheese, and ‘sobrassada’ sausage are on the table, to go with the wine. His wine and ‘sobrassada’ are the perfect combination. For Jaume, winemaking is like a passionate relationship: “You have to give her what she wants and always give your best.”
Seductive cherry red colour reflections dominate the glass. A bouquet consists of delicious fruits like raspberries and blackberries. The palate is also indulged by these fruits. A beautiful tannin structure is involved. The finish fully convinces us.
