Macià Batle (D.O. Binissalem) might be one of Mallorca’s younger bodegas, but the 150-year heritage of Batle family wine production has contributed to its considerable success.
Their bodega in Santa Maria del Camà was built in 1998, but vineyards tended by the grandfather of current bodega director Ramon Servalls i Batle are still in use. A combination of tradition, new technology and increasing knowledge, has resulted in award-winning wines.
Innovatively combining Mallorcan grapes such as Manto Negro, Callet and Premsal with classic varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah, produces high-quality modern wines bursting with character – up to 650,000 litres in a good year.
Germany, the UK and Switzerland are their main export markets, but others include Denmark, Austria and Japan.
Bottle (75 cl) prices for their five red, one rosé and three white wines range from €5 (Añada) to €15 for the tinto Reserva Privada. The latter (Wine Masters International silver medal winner) is a marriage of exceptional wine and art: each year an internationally-renowned artist designs the bottle label. Original artwork from artists including Yannick Vu, Rafa Forteza, Natasha Zupan, Ramon Canet, Jim Bird, and Rebecca Horn, is permanently exhibited at the bodega.
Free visits to Macià Batle can be made at any time during opening hours, but pre-arranged group and guided visits (which can include a tutored tasting) cost €8 – €14 euros per person, depending on the type of visit. Reflecting their international market, guides speaking English, German, Russian, Spanish and Catalan are available.
The bodega also offers a range of gourmet products, including extra virgin olive oil, pâtés, and sundried tomatoes in oil, perfectly complementing their wines. Anyone for a picnic?
