In recent years wine made in Mallorca has become more recognized and marketed internationally. Sommelier Daniel Arias of select wine store Isla Catavinos in Palma de Mallorca explains.
“Before, producing wine was not a lucrative business in Mallorca. Grape growers preferred to sell their grapes to the Spanish peninsula. Now Mallorcan wine brands have strongly come into vogue.”The core of Mallorca´s wine production is in Binissalem, although the vineyards are mainly around Santa María. Binissalem´s most celebrated vineyards are José Luis Ferrer and Macia Batle.
Recommendable are also the wines made by Toni Gelabert and his brother Miguel (different companies) with the D.O.“Pla i Llevant”.
A speciality is white wine made of “Chardonnay Blanc de Blanc” grapes. Smaller vineyards are Anima Negra (Felanitx) and Ribas (Consell), which is the oldest. The indigenous grapes are Callet and Mantonegro for red wine, and Malvasia and Prensal Blanc for white wine.
Chef Benet Vicens of Béns d´Avall restaurant in Deià recommends the following wine: Vins Miguel Gelabert Chardonnay Roure 2007 und Vins Toni Gelabert Chardonnay 2007. And Daniel´s all time favourite? “D.O. Ribera del Duero Terreus 2001” (red wine) from Valladolid. Cheers!
