Things to do in Mallorca

The people of Palma love to shop and that’s no surprise when the city offers great high-street brands, one-off boutiques and designer goods. Follow the locals away from the main roads, head off into the narrow streets that lead from Bar Bosch in the centre of town and you’ll find a pedestrian’s paradise.

Carrer d’Orfila runs alongside the church and Orfila Papeleria is a paradise for all things beautiful in the world of paper. Notebooks, schoolbooks, photo albums, journals, take the plunge and go inside… you’ll be spoiled for choice. Next door you’ll see Frasquet, the chocolate shop. The side door from chocolate heaven opens onto Costa d’en Brossa. These narrow streets are perfect for summer shopping, as there’s always some natural shade. There’s music here too thanks to one of the shops. Sometimes it’s jazz or something classical to inspire your spending. Fashionistas will know True Love for their Miss Sixty collections and further along is Bossa. Here you’ll find candy-coloured jewellery, sparkling Indian slippers and women’s clothing, including NoaNoa and Sybilla’s colourful creations. If you’re looking for something different, this is the place. It is perfect for gifts, especially if you’re treating yourself. Farther along, bebé bombón has beautiful children’s clothing, and Biscuter, across the way, sells vintage clothing. At the top of the street Les Comptoirs de Palma has been open since April. If you’re decorating at home, re-designing a room, looking for a house-warming or wedding gift, check in here.

Carry on up the stairs and you’ll find yourself at Placa Cort, the Town Hall and that amazing olive tree that takes pride of place. Turn right, go down the steps and you’re on Pas d’en Quint. Watch how you go, don’t trip on all your shopping bags while you’re trying to look left and right and negotiate the shallow steps! On the left you’ll see

Golfos, a men’s clothing store that’s got a great supply of Docker’s, Polo by Ralph Lauren and Thomas Burberry.

For shoes, check out Charol on the left and Ayamans on the right. Farther down, Pasatiempo is benefiting from a face-lift that’s seen the shop go from dark to dazzling. Come here if you’re in the market for a new pair of designer trainers or a logo T-shirt that will draw attention when you’re dancing at Pacha. As you turn the corner watch for the toy soldiers and immaculate train sets in the window of toy shop La Industrial. If you’re shopping with the kids, good luck trying to get them past without actually crossing the threshold.

Maybe the promise of sugar jellies and chocolate will do the trick? Turn left here into Sant Nicolau and at no.2 you can’t miss the window display of the Bomboneria. This building and its neighbour Charcuteria were first established in 1872, according to the sign above the door. Ladies looking for a Custo top should check what’s on offer in Bis Fuster and if you’ve got money to burn, step into the designer world of Michal Negrin for exquisite necklaces and earrings, accessories and clothing. Some stores still close for the lunchtime siesta but not this one, so when you’ve decided you really must have that pair of earrings you won’t be disappointed. You’ll probably smell L’Occitane before you step inside. This French store has all its goodies here – there’s something for you, for him, for the house. A favourite is the lavender home fragrance… Provence comes to Palma!
