When the history of beach clubs in Mallorca is written, Mhares Sea Club will deserve a chapter all of its own – which is some statement for a venue that opened only this year. Mhares is on the site of the former Beach Club Delta, which was one of the first beach clubs on the island when it opened 38 years ago. It’s also the site where 800 years ago, medieval labourers started quarrying away the marés sandstone that was used to build Palma cathedral.
The new club has come about after a massive renovation project in which nothing was left to chance. Hours of thought went into everything from the name – Mhares is a fusion of mar (sea) and the sandstone – to the exact shade of the furniture (when a suitable one wasn’t found, one was invented). The two main colours are beige and blue, representing the stone and the sea. There is space for 200 sunloungers with a further 30 in the privé area. Lunch prices in the kitchen run by Argentinian head chef Juan Carlos Ávalos range from €16 to €22 for a main course. Signature dishes are the paella, the tuna tartare and the steak tartare. The mojito is said by some to be the ‘best in Palma Bay’. A chill-out terrace upstairs is available for those who want to relax even more in this seriously cool club.
Lowdown: No cover charge, though a sunlounger is €15, which includes a towel, parasol and the first drink. A Monday-Friday special includes lunch and sunlounger for €35. Opens from 10am to 1am (pool closes at 8pm) from April to October. Reservation advised. Parking for 60 cars.
Verdict: An oasis, far from everything else, with the sea in front of it and a wooded mountain behind it. The blood-red sun sinking into the sea during the Sunset Party has to be seen.
