About Palma College
Palma College opened in 2013 and is to date the only dedicated sixth form college in the Balearics. Located in the Palma’s old town, the college bridges the gap between school and university, and offers much more than tuition for AS and A2 levels.
Thirty-five students, of 22 nationalities, were enrolled at the time of writing (spring 2016), and the capacity is for not more than 50 students.
Students can attend Palma College from age 16 and must demonstrate a high level of spoken and written English.
Teaching is in English by qualified teachers who have experience with this age group. It is the college’s policy that class sizes never exceed ten students. There can therefore be a waiting list for certain subjects, so early enrollment is highly recommended.
Thirteen core subjects are offered, although if requested by students, additional subjects will be made available when possible.
Students typically choose four AS level subjects to study in the Lower Sixth, and three A2 level subjects in the Upper Sixth. These classes are supplemented by 15 minute one-on-one sessions with teachers or tutors each week.
The school day runs from 09:00 hrs to 17:00 hrs although students are not obliged to remain in school when they have no lessons.
Teachers and tutors support and guide students in their plans for life beyond sixth form, whether it is university, a gap year or an apprenticeship. Careers guidance and help with university applications is all part of the package.
To date, 90% of students have gained their first-choice university place, while the others have secured jobs or are on paid gap years.
As the school is located in an old palace in the heart of the old town in Palma, there are no outdoor facilities. There is an art studio on site and a performing arts department in operation. There are no science labs at the school, however. Instead, students visit the professional lab in Parc Bit once a month.
Students are expected to pursue their choice of sports outside of school.
Extra Curricular Activities
In addition to academic studies, all students take part in PHSE (Personal Health, Social and Economic Education) and a varied Enrichment Programme that includes guest speakers, workshops, visits and activities designed to broaden horizons and better prepare students for life in the 21st century.
Lower sixth students have the option of going on a two-week international study exchange. The school can also organise work placements following exams at the end of the academic year.
Annual school fees are 16,000€ (18,000€ for international students). This includes text books, the enrichment programme, and local excursions. There is no uniform and no hidden extras.
Single subject fees are also an option.
A one-off registration fee and security deposit are taken.
Bursaries are awarded to some students who would not otherwise be able to attend the college. This year, one student will be offered a sponsored free place to study an A level in Performing Arts.
The college is located in the centre of Palma so is accessible to all those living in the city. It is a 15 minute walk from Plaza España putting it within easy reach for those travelling to the city by bus or train.
Facilities close to the school
Located in the heart of the old town, the college is within walking distance of all that Palma has to offer, from historic buildings and art galleries to shopping, restaurants and more.
