About Sin Embargo
Owned by Englishman Steve Walsh, Sin Embargo offers a unique concept in Mal Pas, Alcúdia: a combination of café/bar and art gallery. The location is idyllic, opposite the small marina, with ample street parking around. There’s a comfortable and stylish chill-out terrace, a shaded dining terrace, and tables indoors. Within the café/bar area there are several original artworks, and a piano, and the ambience is friendly and fun.
On a day-to-day basis the place is run by a team comprising Steve’s daughter Steffi, son Elliot, and Marcos. Sin Embargo opens from 08:30h, for breakfast and coffee, and is open all day until 00:30h, serving lunch, dinner, coffee and drinks.
The menu is in the form of a bound hardback book, titled ‘Made for sharing’, and is in Spanish, English, and German.
Family is important to Steve, and children are welcome here: high chairs are available and there’s a selection of children’s dishes (from 6 to 8 euros), using the same high-quality ingredients as the adult dishes, and including a portion of their signature chips, and ice cream for dessert.
The wine list includes house wines by the glass; Spanish and Mallorcan whites, rosés, and reds; a white from Australia’s Hunter Valley; a rosé from Provence, and a small choice of cavas and champagnes.
Art at Sin Embargo
As well as the original art in the café/bar itself, there are several rooms within the property where you can find an eclectic mix of art, including some great conversation-starters.
Both Steve and his brother are keen artists and their work is throughout the gallery. Paul produces unique and striking graphic art using a computer programme he designed. Other art is by local artists, and includes paintings and sculptures – including a papier mâché sculpture of Amy Winehouse.
Food at Sin Embargo
The names of dishes on the menu – of which these are a selection – reflect the fun nature of Sin Embargo:
Free Willy – Tartar of Norwegian salmon with avocado and mango marinated in lemon juice – 10 euros
Temper Temper – Skewers of tiger prawns, tempura-fried, served with a dip – 14 euros
Steff’s Choice – Two medallions of fillet steak with mi-cuit foie between , served with red wine sauce – 14 euros
Cous Cous of Course – Timbal of cous cous and selected vegetables marinated with citric fruit juices and fresh herbs – 7 euros.
The Sin Em Burger – choice of Black Angus beefburger or prime red tuna burger, served with portion of signature chips and relish – both 14 euros.
Chocolate Cubed – chocolate cake with chocolate sauce, nuts . . . and chocolate 4 euros.
Cheese Cake – Delicate cream cheese tart with essence of orange and vanilla on crunchy biscuit base – 4 euros.
Steve & Paul Walsh
Steve, Paul, and their brother Tony were previously renowned Internet entrepreneurs. Their first business was a design and sales promotions agency, which went on to build web sites and work in internet marketing.
They set up Easycover.com – the first insurance comparison site in the UK – and, in 1999, Laterooms.com, which was incredibly successful and eventually sold to TUI Travel. The sale of this business left the brothers in a position to pursue personal projects and interests.
Steve – who has a long association with Mallorca – created Sin Embargo in Mal Pas.
