A sleepier village than Estellencs is probably hard to find in the Tramuntana. In winter it is trapped by snow and is overrun by tourists in summer; the town falls back into its usual quietude in the evenings. Everyone knows everyone here and one member of this community is truly unique. Tomeu´s achieved so many things: working with a tour operator, running his own restaurant, barkeeper. Today he runs a hotel – together with his wife, he calls ‘Schatzi’ (‘Honey’ in German) – and spends his free time on his hobby of winemaking.
Tomeu Isern grows vines on several terraces of vineyards, rented from the land owners; they get 50% of the wine production: a joint venture, where both sides have a lot of fun. It´s real ‘garage winemaking’. They produce in a garage; storage and retail space are in a garage; even the plots (terraces) are often no larger than a garage. The colour of the whites stands out. According to age and maturation, the wines shine in shades of amber. The colour inspired the names Ambrat, Amberi and Ambrassia. All carry the basic word ‘Ambre’, which means ‘Amber’ in mallorquín. Tomeu – or simply Tolo – always happily welcomes visitors. “So I can leave the house with justification for my ‘Schatzi’.” A German nickname coming from a Mallorcan veteran sounds a bit strange, we think, and say goodbye.
At first sight this Malvasia bewitches with bright yellow reflections. The bouquet is intense, lively and fresh. Notes from apple and ripe pear. On the palate it is juicy with fine mineral tones. The finish is very intensive.

In the glass, the Ambrull shows bright-red colours. Roasted notes emerge, while drinking, with hints of Mediterranean herbs. In the mouth it tastes slightly salty, typical of wines from the Tramuntana. A really different island wine, also in terms of finish.
