Olive trees are truly amazing. Sculpted trunks inspire artists to produce beautiful sculptures.
Then there is the fruit, an essential element in the Mediterranean diet, producing nutritious oil, formerly referred to as liquid gold. No wonder these trees are a protected species!
The poet Robert Graves who chose Deià as his home, found endless inspiration in these beautiful trees and they are present in his poetry:
Under the Olives by Robert Graves
We never would have loved had love not struck
Swifter than reason, and despite reason:
Under the olives, our hands interlocked,
We both fell silent:
Each listened for the other’s answering
Sigh of unreasonableness
– Innocent, gentle, bold, enduring, proud.
At Belmond La Residencia the hillside is home to over 1.500 olives that are gradually being returned to their former glory after years of abandonment. The work is slow and costly but the hotel intends to eventually return the hillside groves to the condition they were in when the estate was at its zenith as an oil producer.
Strolling through the extensive grounds you see some amazing olive trunks that have naturally sculpted themselves into veritably remarkable shapes. The trees are hundreds of years old –some over one thousand years. These are true masterpieces.
This part of Mallorca is a UNESCO world heritage site emphasizing the importance of caring for the land. The property has 14 hectares of mountain olive groves and slowly the olive production is increasing year by year as more trees are looked after.
To help the project along, and to involve friends of Belmond La Residencia in the task ahead, the hotel is offering the possibility of adopting an olive tree. Those interested will be allocated a tree, and ownership will be marked by means of the name sculpted into an olive wood plaque. The money raised will help towards the restoration and care of the trees and each year the owner will receive a bottle of the precious ‘liquid gold’ produced with olives from the farm.
The price of adoption for one year is 200 €
Belmond La Residencia invites you to become involved in helping an ancient olive tree recover its former glory and enjoy the wonderful taste of the extra virgin olive oil with your food, giving a constant reminder of this beautiful mountain land.
