Agapanto is renowned as a romantic destination for weddings, celebrations and dining à deux. The heart of this rambling, soulful eatery is the proprietor and ‘hostess with the mostess’, Ana Maria Sturm, whose colourful personality resonates in the atmosphere and on the menu.
Situated on the beach at the quieter end of the sandy crescent that is Platja d’en Repic beach in Port de Sóller, the ambience is the essence of bohemian Mediterranean. Candles, buddhas and flower boxes bursting with herbs and Agapanthus (for which the restaurant is named) decorate the seaside terrace, where an eclectic mix of kaftan-clad bathers and elegantly dressed regulars dine at midday.
We sit on the terrace facing the glittering turquoise waters under the shade of an umbrella, perusing the menu with a chilled glass of the restaurant’s own Rosado Agapanto; deliciously crisp, with a hint of vanilla. Herbs and eggs from Agapanto’s own garden (where fat and happy hens roam free), along with produce from local suppliers, are used in the Mediterranean comfort fare.
To start, we ordered a tuna tartare with mango, dill and red onion. The freshness of the dill is nice, if missing a hint of picante. A thinly sliced pulpo a la plancha is delicate and flavourful, served with a homemade pesto aioli and grilled asparagus. Fried langoustines are crisp and rich, balanced in texture with spicy rocket, sweet beetroot cream, and avocado. The fish of the day, sea bass with yellow curry and pesto (again!) mashed potatoes is an odd mix of ingredients, but somehow it works. Succulent lamb chops are served rare with au gratin potatoes and julienne vegetables.
The meal’s finale? A lemon meringue pie with strawberry coulis is a perfect happy ending.
Agapanto’s menu announces “there is only one success, to be able to spend your life in your own way…” Eating at Agapanto reminds us of what is important – generosity of spirit and eating well. The Agapanto philosophy imbues the food, the atmosphere, and when you leave, you take it with you.
Why eat here?
One of the best views of the sunset over the harbour in Port de Sóller.
