To find a Mallorcan speaking fluent English is rare but, coupled with a strong American accent it is even more rare. Most people aged over 40 still struggle as a result of the foreign language ban during Francoism. But Andrés Gelabert lived in the USA with his parents for many years – and now English is, for him, like his mother tongue ‘Mallorquín’.Only because of love, which he found in his homeland, he came back, got married and stayed. His love for his wife and daughter is reflected in the brilliant pink-coloured wine ‘Lau Rosa’, a label originating from the two first names of his beloveds.
Andrés learned as a teenager to taste and sniff wines. At 18 years old, when other teenagers like to go partying with beer, his father took him to a wine tasting. The novice sommelier was to share his opinion. At that time, he had mixed feelings, but it was a formative experience that led him to his current passion. Now the family winery is built up and its annual production has multiplied from less than 15,000 to almost 200,000 bottles within a few years. What was the key to success?
The answer is easy: “mass appeal”. Andrés only produces small quantities for connoisseurs. But the main market for wine production is the “large clientele who appreciates high-standard quality”. His sales strategy is strongly influenced by American methods. The Viognier is made from white Viognier grapes, Andrés´s latest invention. This first-class grape originating from the French Rhône region is characterized by a fine fruity aroma reminiscent of apricots or peaches. In the long term the young father wants to make it one of his finest wines.
78% Cabernet Sauvignon & 22% Syrah.
A liquid of garnet reflections pours out of the bottle. It needs a little time to unfold. The delightful cherry and blackberry blend in the bouquet contains hints of thyme and lavender. Vigorous substance on the palate, and great balance. The extended finish promises the ideal accompaniment to a perfect evening.
Ripening 30 months in oak barrels make this wine so valuable!
