Basic Restaurant is one of those secret gems known famously between locals. Its unassuming location off Calle Aragón makes it not the most obvious place to find high-skilled chef Gerhard Berktold, but Basic knows how to deliver. While its exterior is kept simple and yes, pretty basic, it comes down to that well-known saying that appearance isn’t everything, and what Basic does best is all in the quality of its food.
We sit down towards the back of the restaurant where natural light floods in through the windows.
Works of abstract art tie-in its red walls and cool slate tables, but Basic’s décor functions more on a practical level, to simply provide a comfortable place to eat.
Therefore, the real ambience is generated by the locals that eat there, amongst light chatter and intermittent laughter it feels instantly warm and friendly.
Our starters come in the form of prawns with cauliflower cous-cous and a beef carpaccio with cheese, tomato and croutons. Expertly arranged, it is evident from the presentation alone that Gerhard’s career includes a list of five star-establishments. The cauliflower arrives broken-up into tiny florets which, folded into the avocado cream, is a fresh combination. The prawns, juicy and sweet, are balanced on top with a golden cracker for added texture.
Next, our mains include grilled seabass on a bed of carrots and caramelised duck with sweet potato and figs. The duck, while not the smoothest cut, was a delight when paired with steaming potato and drizzles of gravy. A real taste of comfort food which – diners well-acquainted with a British roast dinner – will definitely enjoy.
Our waitress comes over for a light-hearted chat before our hazelnut cake with coffee cream arrives. Her passion and hospitality is a testament to Basic who care about the atmosphere they create. Locals enjoying lunch by themselves is proof in itself that Basic make people feel at ease. We finish with a light sponge topped with smooth cream and Gerhard proves once again that what lies at the heart of his restaurant is good quality food loved by all.
