The name Forn Nou (or ‘New Oven’) comes from the bakery for which this property was originally built back in 1929 – by the present owner’s grandfather. Today, it is a wonderfully quaint boutique hotel, retaining plenty of its period charm together with a hip, modern makeover and handful of attractive rooms.
Its restaurant stands out as much for its excellent market-fresh gastronomy, as its wonderful rooftop terrace. And these, together with its location in the picturesque heart of Artà, make the hotel a place to stay that certainly offers a change from the norm.
Even the positioned of the hotel has a certain charm, set on the corner of a fork in the road in the heart of the pretty town of Artà. The surrounding buildings share the quaint, traditional quality of the hotel itself, and lining narrow streets that almost feel frozen in time. The town itself is situated in the northeast of the island, tucked in a valley a few kilometres inland, and surrounded by the scenic mountains of the Llevant Nature Reserve. It’s about an hours’ drive from the airport and the Mallorcan capitals, Palma.

Relax & enjoy
With its emphasis on bijou, understated charm, Forn Nou doesn’t have the sort of facilities some might expect from a hotel. It does offer, however, various spots where guests can unwind, including a cosy bar and rooftop terrace (with lift) providing lovely views over Artà and its medieval fortress of Sant Salvador. The hotel’s friendly owner, Toni, is often on hand and happy to answer any questions or give advice on best exploring the area.
Six of the Forn Nou’s guest rooms are located in the hotel itself, plus there are others dotted around the surrounding buildings. Each of the rooms is different, and spread across four types ranging from simple doubles to deluxe suites. All are tastefully decorated in an unfussy blend of crisp white walls, pine wood fixtures, and the occasional colourful abstract artwork. All are air conditioned with reliable free Wi-Fi. Upgraded rooms add extras such as freestanding tubs or balconies, while the duplex suite offers a spacious terrace with particularly glorious views.
Eat & drink
The hotel especially shines when it comes to its culinary offerings, which can be enjoyed across various parts of the hotel. Firstly, their Café Bistro provides a lovely spot to enjoy drinks or light meals on a street-front terrace. Breakfast can also be taken on the sunny rooftop patio, and includes the likes of pastries, fruit, yogurt, local cheese and meats, and freshly squeezed orange juice. For dinner, their superb restaurant offers both an à la carte menu and a good-value three-course set menu, made from market-fresh produce. There’s also an excellent wine cellar where you can dine next to the open kitchen.

Most attractions in the town are within easy strolling distance of the hotel, including the main pedestrianised shopping lane located just a couple minutes away on foot. The Artà Regional Museum is also just minutes away, while the Santuari de Sant Salvador is a five-minute walk. Out of town, there are numerous beaches within 15-20 minute drive, as well as the famous Caves of Artà.
Good to know
The restaurant still uses the bakery’s original wood oven to give the meat a deliciously distinctive flavour.
