Hotel Glòria de Sant Jaume is tucked away on an ancient cobblestone street in the beautiful center of Mallorca’s Gothic capital city, Palma de Mallorca. The historic aristocratic palace has been on Palma’s historic registry since the 16th-century. It became the “passion project” of owners, Heidi Wolf and Jordi Cabau who fell in love with the building. A laborious renovation began, with the intention of preserving the spirit and Belle Epoque decor of the Mallorcan mansion, but modernising the hotel with 21st-century amenities. The result? A labor of love in which no detail has been overlooked and no expense spared.
The neighbourhood of Sant Jaume is one of Palma’s most coveted, and getting lost in the shady narrow caminos is part of the charm of staying here. You will find wonderful independent shops and cozy local tapas bars. Just steps from what many consider the Champs Elysee of Palma – the Passeig des Born, and Jaume III – where chic designer boutiques, and chain stores offer the island’s best shopping. Mallorca is considered a gourmet destination, so ask the friendly concierge at Hotel Glòria Sant Jaume to book you a table at one of the amazing new restaurants on the island.
Relax & enjoy
The Hotel Glòria de Sant Jaume has been compared to the Parisian Costes Hotel in part because of the intimate snug bar, cozy rambling patio and bistro-style restaurant, Patio de Glòria de Sant Jaume. The subterranean marés spa has a surprisingly long indoor lap pool and treatment rooms with a hammam, sauna and relaxation lounge in what was once the cavernous pozo, or well, of the hotel.
Staying in one of the 14 rooms of the hotel is like being the guest in a Grandee’s mansion on Mallorca. Each room in the hotel was considered individually and decorated with art and artifacts from the owners’ personal collection. Hand-painted tiles lay on the floors and old wooden beams of the original structure are revealed. Luxurious L’Occitane products in the en suite bathrooms and plush robes are among the amenities in the rooms. Beds in Hotel Glòria de Sant Jaume are made up with crisp linens where church bells ringing in the hours of the morning will rouse you from a restful night’s sleep.
Eat & drink
On a friday night, locals and lovebirds meet for champagne in the bar of El Patio de Glòria.
The decor is eclectic Parisian meets Belle Epoque in Mallorca; herringbone wood parquet, pastel velvet furnishings, and antique brass fittings inform the rough hewn stone and beams. Architectural elements have been left intact, or repurposed, leaving the original patina of ironwork and stone untouched. The owners epicurean tastes are reflected in the highly personal wine list, which offers difficult to procure Billecarte-Salmon Rosé Champagne alongside inexpensive but wonderful local reds.
The El Patio de Glòria restaurant menu is innovative and traditional Mallorcan comfort cuisine, with vegan and vegetarian options available.
Close to the hotel
The location of the Hotel Glòria de Sant Jaume is within walking distance of all the major sites of Palma. The eponymous Gothic Roman La Seu Cathedral, Es Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and the beautiful Old Town are not to be missed.
