On the left side of the highway from Santa Maria to Sencelles lies the old country house of Andreu´s grandmother. The name for his bodega was quickly found. Ca Sa Padrina means simply ‘The grandmother’s house’. Soon to be retired biology teacher Andreu is cultivating grapes on 12 hectares of fertile soil, for his three types of bottled wines: “One for each colour, and one sweet wine is soon to be added,” says Andreu. Teaching his students biology every day, he administers his vines after school with the same doctrine.
Ca Sa Padrina
Here at the finca, nature still feels like real nature. He loves that and spends almost every afternoon on his estate. The work in the fields on the vines, the development of the wines in the winery, and the refining process in the barrels are his elixir of life. But most of all Andreu lovingly welcomes his guests on the terrace, enthroned above the fields, even in January at 10 degrees. At least the sun is shining!
The red Montenegro is offered for six euros at the bodega: exceptional, considering the fact that only 25,000 kilos of grapes are harvested – on 12 hectares of land. Andreu cuts out many fruits to improve quality. Two thousand litres per hectare is a very small quantity; two or three times more is usual.
Manto Negro, Callet & Cabernet Sauvignon.
This wine is not a typical Spanish one: light ruby-red colours with elegant reflections on the edge. It´s a product from exceptional grapes. Manto Negro and Callet have a strong presence. The colour immediately brings the French wines from Burgundy to our mind. The typical bouquet is fabulous. Notes of red berries, plums, and rose petal find their way into the nose. Then Mallorcan soil arises on the palate: an earthy, mineral freshness with structure and pure strength.
Great wines from Burgundy seem small compared to this Mallorcan.
Prensal & Chardonnay.
A yellow-green colour shimmers in the glass, with aromas of ripe pears, almond blossoms, and Mediterranean spices. The drinking pleasure starts on the palate: fresh, fruity, and quite crispy. It is a true white wine with a special finish.
Fresh, summery white wine.
