About Cala Mayor
Cala Mayor or Cala Major is a purpose-built beach resort close to Mallorca’s capital city on the southwest coast.
Although now a little dilapidated, Cala Mayor is undergoing significant improvements. This, plus its blue flag beach status and proximity to the bustling city of Palma, make it a good bet as an up-and-coming area for property buyers on the hunt for good deals.
This location is very good for access to the up-market resorts of the southwest coast and the motorway network. It is also the location of Marivent Palace which is a holiday home for the Spanish royal family.

History and Culture of Cala Mayor
Cala Mayor is one of Mallorca’s longest established resorts. Because of its sheltered position, the waters here are clear and blue and the beach offers fine white sand and good facilities. This is in marked contrast to beaches east of Palma which are more exposed to the elements. As the closest beach to the city of Palma, it can become very busy and crowded during the summer.
It does suffer from some unattractive 1980’s style high-rise blocks, but the advantages of its location and beach-front setting makes this a very popular resort – and not just with holiday-makers. Cala Mayor has a mixed international community of full-time residents, including many locals. If you are interested in history there are also many sites nearby worth visiting.
Shopping Cala Mayor
If you are only looking to buy things for a beach holiday you will find what you need in Cala Mayor, but with Palma right on your doorstep you have a shoppers paradise with 5-10 minutes’ drive and the shopping centre of Porto Pi is also very close.

Living in Cala Mayor
Cala Mayor is excellent for living all-year-round, although you may find that it becomes very busy during the summer months.
The community is mixed and international and also includes many Mallorcan locals. Because of some of the less attractive architecture here, prices are surprisingly affordable considering its great location.
There are further improvements planned for this area, so if you can tolerate a little waiting, it is a good area to snap up a bargain. You can easily pick-up a small apartment for less than 150,000 euros here, but luxury penthouses and villas are pricier and range from around 1.5 million to 4 million euros. There are also very good international schools close by.
