Here in Binissalem lives and works a winemaker like a comic hero from ‘Asterix and Obelix’ – who were surrounded by Romans and fought against tyranny. His name is Andreu Villalonga. He fights in the fourth generation against the powerful wine lobby. Surrender is not an option for him. Associations, organizations, communities or labels – to him, they are only expenses the customer finally has to pay. All this only provokes an average “mass taste”, as Andreu calls his provocative and critical theory.

Ca’n Novell is different in many ways. Here you can deal without retailers. Everything comes to the wine drinkers through direct sales. So it is not unusual for private customers to have ordered wine from Andreu´s family for 45 years. One of them gets six bottles of wine every three weeks for a total of 12 euros, delivered free of charge to the third floor of his apartment in Palma’s Old Town. The environmental aspect is important here. A huge, in-house bottle washer cleans empty wine bottles returned by customers.
The purchase of new bottles and especially the expensive delivery from the mainland to the island would cost 60 cents per bottle, explains Andreu. The average price per litre is less than two euros, but the wines are not to be surpassed in terms of authenticity and originality. Whoever really wants to try something different, will experience a miraculous taste from the vines growing in this region. Ca’n Novell has become a tourist magnet with its unique wine boutique. Anyone visiting the market of Binissalem can’t avoid visiting. Astonished eyes watch in surprise. This is not a ‘garage winery’, but a bodega with a proud annual production of over 100,000 bottles.
é roure 2012
60% Syrah & 40% Merlot.
In the glass, this wine reveals promising dark red colours. Tasting the bouquet is like sticking one´s nose into a jam jar: the aroma of ripe fruits arises. 18 months in new ‘barrique’ barrels enhance a strong minerality. On the palate, this complexity fully expands. Also the aftertaste is just amazing. Yet this youthful wine is not fully mature, it really should be decanted. But decant a wine worth less than 5 euros? You decide!
This wine has the value of a wine costing five times as much.
