Canyamel Golf is beautifully located in the northeast of the Balearic island of Mallorca. It was inaugurated in 1988 and designed by José Gancedo (the renowned Spanish course designer who was also responsible for the course at Pollensa). It was designed to impact as little on the natural beauty of the location, and retain some attractive existing features, such as a preserved small ancient stone house on the 9th hole and the traditional dry stone walls that come into play on the later holes. Olive, fig and palm trees were retained as further reminders of the course’s agricultural heritage.
It’s a very well-maintained course that is challenging for all abilities; golfers need precise shots and distance here. The PGA has classified this Canyamel Golf as an ideal event for an Open event.
The course runs through a small valley that goes down towards the Mediterranean, so there are superb views to enjoy as well as the play. If the weather conditions are right and it’s a clear day, golfers will be rewarded with a glimpse of Mallorca’s sister Balearic Island of Menorca, from the 5th hole.
The course is located in a valley floor and can be walked if you’re fit but, otherwise, buggies are for hire and can be taken onto the fairways.
Other facilities at Canyamel Golf include a driving range for 40 people, pitching green, putting greens and practice bunker. The clubhouse is home to a restaurant, lounge and the usual changing facilities.
If you come to Mallorca and play at Canyamel Golf, be sure to bring a camera to take photos to show your fellow golfers back home what a wonderful island this is for the sport.
