Overlooking Palma from the hills above the city with views across the whole bay, Castillo Hotel Son Vida dates back to the 13th century and has been exquisitely refurbished to become a luxurious hotel for avid golfers, families or history buffs. Previous guests have included the likes of Grace Kelly, Sting, Maria Callas and even royalty and world leaders.
A golfers’ paradise, this 5-star hotel is located on the Arabella Golf Son Vida course and only a short shuttle ride to the neighbouring Son Quint and Son Muntaner courses. The most prestigious address in Mallorca, the Son Vida estate is known as the Beverly Hills of Palma due to its leafy roads leading to huge houses that are home to the movers and shakers of the island. Only 10 minutes from central Palma, it is a convenient place to stay but also extremely tranquil with spectacular views and an air of exclusivity.
Relax & enjoy
As well as the tranquil setting of Castillo Son Vida, there are plenty of facilities and extras on offer for those staying here. The outdoor pool, exclusively for hotel guests, is bathed in sunshine with impressive views and leads to the modern, luxurious, Nordic-influenced spa that has a relaxing and subtle atmosphere. Complete with a large indoor swimming pool, a Jacuzzi, sauna and 4 treatment rooms guests can unwind and be pampered with local products from Demarés. The 24-hour gym has top of the range equipment and can be accessed through a separate entrance for non-hotel guests.
Non-hotel guests can also benefit from the spa with day-passes and monthly memberships available.
Divided into two parts, the hotel has an older wing and a newly refurbished suite of rooms. The older part of the building is home to classical rooms with antiques from the Castillo’s past, large comfortable beds and most have full views of Palma and the bay (even from the bath in some cases!). Much of the décor would perhaps be more suited to a stately-home in the UK but ties in nicely with the overall theme of the hotel. The newer part of the hotel has a more economical type of room which, although pleasant, lack the grandeur of the older rooms but nonetheless offer comfortable beds, understated, elegant décor and bathrooms with a walk-in shower.
Eat & drink
The hotel bar, which is adorned with antique rifles, swords and battle paraphernalia, transports you to a bygone era with the mahogany bar, chintzy chairs and a selection of fine whisky.
The large Es Castell restaurant serves a delicious buffet breakfast, tasty lunches and comes into its own in the evenings with fine Mediterranean cuisine served overlooking the twinkling lights of the city. Next door in the Es Ví Tapas restaurant the in-house chef serves a selection of traditional and fusion tapas in addition to the Mallorcan wines that adorn one entire wall of the restaurant. Both restaurants lead onto the expansive terrace which is perfect for al fresco dining in the warmer months.
Close to the hotel
The 3 golf courses are a stone’s throw from the hotel as well as the adjoining golf clubs with restaurants and other facilities for the guests. Palma centre is only 10 minutes’ drive away with all of the major sights and the airport.
Good to know
The hotel offers facilities for meetings and events or host your dream wedding here on the terrace or in the ballroom restaurant overlooking the city.
Why stay here
A prestigious location, with stunning views from the terrace, a superb modern spa and a castle with plenty of history that has hosted famous guests over the years.
