In order to maintain the traditional bottling technique, which most customers prefer, the Tarragona-based wine producer Cellers Unió (CU) has developed a recycling concept for corks. Thus the millions of corks thrown away every year in Mallorca would be collected and prepared for re-use. The project is being run already successfully in Catalonia. Cellers Unió is currently carrying out a research project to introduce the cork recycling concept on the island.
The winegrower association is large enough to develop techniques like this, combining 26 Catalan vineyards with several recognized names of origin under its umbrella: Priorat, Montsant, Terra Alta, Tarragona, Catalunya and Cava. Eighty per cent of the annual wine output is exported to Germany and the USA.
The distribution centre for Cellers Unió on Mallorca has been situated in the region of Marratxí for more than 40 years. And the business concept has always been associated with gourmet quality. On the vineyards of Catalonia – Cellers Unió doesn´t produce in Mallorca – the grapes are grown for painstakingly produced luxury wines for demanding palates on the Balearics
The “high end drop” CU mostly sells on the island is called Perlat. Its combination of grapes provides a contemporary, sophisticated wine, highly rated by sommeliers and many proprietors of local gourmet restaurants.
Cellers Unió regularly provides wine catering at different public events such as charity dinners, golf tournaments and art exhibitions. Long-term relationships of trust are carefully maintained with all customers. “Clients are treated like friends,” Mallorca´s branch manager Bernat Fiol remarks.
Intelligent market positioning gives the brand instant recognition.
On the Spanish peninsula (in Catalonia) Cellers Unió offers guided tours through the different vineyards and wine-cellars. The Mallorca distribution centre sells from stock. For example, private customers can buy one bottle of Perlat red wine at a price of 6 euros there. Any good wine dealers on the island should stock Cellers Unió products.
