The cuisine is Asian/Mediterranean cuisine, prepared superbly by chef Max Werner. Dining is all-day, family-style, and sharing of dishes is encouraged by the friendly multinational staff.
From the à la carte menu, four of us shared two starters: crispy squid and wasabi, and scallops with carrot and apple chutney and beetroot-curry crumble.
If you love Japanese food, splash out on the excellent ‘sushi and sashimi variation’, which can easily satisfy four. Also offered are meat, fish and seafood, and kimchi udon noodles (veggie), and the ‘dessert variation’ – a sharing plate of sweet temptations.
The wine list includes coast by east’s own labels, cocktails, and premium sakes. Service can be a little slow in high season.
coast by east is expensive, but the port location, restaurant ambience, service, and cuisine make it a memorable treat.
Antonio Zaforteza, managing director of Ocibar (the managing company) says it’s “a marina for everyone”. You certainly don’t need a sleek Sunseeker, Azimut, or Jongert superyacht to enjoy this glamorous spot. There are restaurants, bars, and fashion and accessory boutiques that have celebrated their prestigious new address with stylish launch events, attended by even the most committed landlubbers.
Occupying prime position in the striking new commercial area is coast by east, Seafood, Grill & Bar. Located on the upper storey is Sansibar Wine, the name of the best-known restaurant and bar on the island of Sylt – Germany’s answer to New York’s The Hamptons. Behind these smart additions to Port Adriano are two of Germany’s hospitality and gastronomy gurus.
Marc Ciunis and Christoph Strenger are probably best known for creating the multi-award-winning hotel described as “one of the coolest places in Hamburg” in ‘The Best 50 Hotels in the World’ feature, published in UK newspaper The Telegraph. Ciunis and Strenger refurbished a former iron foundry – derelict for 30 years – into the dazzling east Hotel, which opened in 2004.
The landmark property, built around a central atrium, is awash with wow factors; Chicago-based designer Jordan Mozer fused Far Eastern influences and Western industrial heritage to create an interior photographed for several glossy European magazines. Features such as curvy pillars, arches, and moulded-resin furnishings – combined with a high standard of hospitality and cuisine – attract Hamburg’s hip crowd to its restaurant, bar, lounge and entertainment . . . despite its location just off the infamous Reeperbahn, in the St Pauli district. In fact, it’s one of the venues credited with turning this once sleazy neighbourhood into Hamburg’s most fashionable for nightlife and culture.
East’s creators brought coast by east and Sansibar Wine to Mallorca after getting to know the Zaforteza family. “They heard about our success in Hamburg and came to visit us. Then Christoph, the rest of the board, and I visited Port Adriano and met Philippe Starck,” says Marc Ciunis, CEO of east Hotel & Restaurant GmbH. “We thought working with Starck and being part of this very special place on Mallorca could be interesting.” Another pairing of coast by east and Sansibar Wine is also open in Hamburg’s HafenCity, the ambitious new urban development on the River Elbe.
The abcMallorca review team went to Port Adriano’s coast by east to experience the company’s hospitality and cuisine. We dined on the extensive decked terrace, furnished with wooden dining tables, benches and chairs, and equipped with cushions and wraps (for cooler temperatures).
Servers are efficient, friendly, and of several nationalities. The smiling Coty looked after us, providing clear explanations of the coast by east concept, and the Asian/Mediterranean fusion cuisine. Family-friendly (with a children’s menu), it offers the concept of “family dining” – dishes placed in the centre of the table for sharing.
We shared a representative selection from the varied menu. Each dish was flavourful, precisely-spiced and delicious. We tried crispy duck salad with peanuts; rock shrimps and peas – with a good wasabi sauce; sea bass with oriental dressing, and fillet of beef and pears – bursting with good notes of spice. A stand-out dish was the fresh-tasting and expertly prepared double sushi and sashimi – accompanied by wasabi paste, sweet pickled ginger and, of course, soy sauce – attractively presented on the deck of a wooden model boat. We finished with coast Variation – a combo of five yummy desserts.
The extensive wine list includes Mallorcan, national and international labels, and a selection created exclusively for east. Wines are available by the bottle, or glass. There are also 11 types of premium sake.
