Welcome to our annual Culture Edition, celebrating and supporting one of the biggest cultural events of the year – ‘La Nit de l’Art’ – which takes place on September 18th. It is a night not to be missed, when the streets of Palma are heaving with enthusiastic art lovers popping from one art gallery to another, appreciating Mallorca’s wonderful cultural life.
We are fortunate that so many culturally interesting people have homes on the island. We met Fabrizio Plessi, who must be quite exhausted having done six exhibitions in six months in six different museums; find out more on page 56.
Cynthia Lennon, the first wife of John Lennon, has called Mallorca her home for many years, we find out on page 62 how she is returning to her roots as an illustrator.
The late German artist Oskar Koller is well known for his beautiful watercolours, and is featured on page 106. An exhibition of his work will be inaugurated on September 18th (‘La Nit de l’Art’) in the abcMallorca SHOP in Palma.
We celebrate the success of two businesses marking anniversaries this year – Relojería Alemana – which is celebrating its 135th anniversary and Belmond La Residencia hotel, welcoming guests now for 30 years.
New businesses under the spotlight include a new spa concept, launched by Peter and Shula Clarke. We meet the man behind the Mediterranean’s first land art resort and applaud local brothers and restaurateurs Christian and Carlos Baques, who have opened two new restaurants. All good news for Mallorca!
Our passion has been and always will be to showcase the very best of what the island has to offer. We cried some tears this summer with the mega-bad publicity Magaluf attracted, so in our Last Word on page 140 Jan Edwards searches for a silver-lining.
Join us in celebrating the best of Mallorca!
