‘Palma de Mallorca’ is no more. The name of Mallorca’s capital city has been changed to the shortened ‘Palma‘. After voting on the name change at the end of 2016, regional government declared that Mallorca’s capital will simply be known as Palma from hereon, claiming that the ‘de Mallorca’ tag is a throwover from Spain’s centralist past. It is the third time in a decade the name has been changed.
It is likely that very soon, visitors arriving at San Joan International Airport will no longer be met by the ‘Palma de Mallorca’ sign, since a full council met to approve the change in January 2017. There have also been calls to change the name of Palma airport so that it reflects the island’s cultural and historic richness, with one suggestion being to rename it ‘Ramon Llull’ after the visionary Mallorcan philosopher.
