What does it feel like, to live here? It is a question many people have when they arrive in Mallorca these days. The capital city, Palma de Mallorca, was voted best city to live in the world by The Sunday Times, and visitors are curious. You have the glittering Mediterranean sea; you have 300 days of sunshine, and an international and sophisticated community of islanders who could live anywhere, and chose to live here. If you are wondering, Es Princep Hotel might give you insight.
The sunlit hotel is located in the coveted La Calatrava neighbourhood close to the Cathedral of Palma de Mallorca. The “Old town“ as the area is called, dates back to before the Romans. The narrow winding cobblestone streets behind the hotel have not changed much over the centuries, connecting plazas and churches. The front steps of Es Princep are the fortified, newly restored city walls. The hotel is just inside the walls looking onto a large swath of green Parc de la Mar, which separates the city and the Paseo Marítimo, with unobstructed views of the sea.
Relax & enjoy
Es Princep is a 68 bedroom 5-star hotel with all the amenities one would expect of a hotel affiliated with the Leading Hotels of the World. The motto here is “whatever you want, whenever you want it.” So if you have a craving or desire, ask the concierge, and they will do their best to accommodate you. There are two featured restaurants and a high-end cocktail bar, as well as a rooftop pool and lounge area. The Coco spa features treatment rooms where you can book therapeutic massages, a sauna, a jacuzzi, and an 18-meter pool.
The concept “the luxury of simple things” is a very Spanish one, and the hotel has borrowed from it. The interior decor of the rooms and the attention to detail throughout the hotel reflect this ethos with an urbane aesthetic. There are several categories of rooms such as premium suite and premium suite with sea view, so it is best to specify when booking. Each room is decorated tastefully, with simple, minimalist interiors. American walnut desks for writing and working are equipped with modern accoutrements. En-suite bathrooms made with local stone are stocked with cult favourite, Le Labo beauty products, and beds are dressed in luxury linens.
Eat & drink
Es Princep’s a casual dining restaurant; Mura serves bistro-style meals from meriendas in the early morning to late night snacks and champagne in the evening. The fine dining restaurant, Bala Roja, is overseen by local island celebrity chef Andreu Genestra. With a concentration on local seafood, his signature presentation and palate, Bala Roja is a modern ideation of Mallorcan gastronomy.

Close to the hotel
When the general manager was asked for recommendations close to the hotel, she said, “the ultimate luxury for us is to take a coffee in the sun at a cafe in Portitxol… with the sea before you.” Palma’s answer to Venice Beach, the hipster area of Portitxol is a brisk walk or short bicycle ride from the hotel. Getting lost in the narrow streets behind the hotel of the Old Town, you will find bustling cafes and wine bars. The gothic La Seu Cathedral and the Arab baths will give you a feeling for the historic city. There is world class shopping on the Borne and Avenida Jaume III if you have forgotten anything.
