Because family life is important on Mallorca, the island has a host of related services, from fertility treatments to gynaecology, and babysitting and private nursing, to counselling for kids.
The inability to conceive a much-wanted baby can be heart-breaking but, with the fertility investigations and treatments available today on Mallorca, it is possible for a couple to achieve their dream of parenthood. Increasing numbers of couples are finding it difficult to conceive naturally, and it’s generally considered that if a woman has not become pregnant after frequent sex for a year – without any form of contraceptive – then the possibility of sterility, in one or both parties of the couple, should be investigated.
Women older than 35, or who have had past gynaecological problems, should wait no longer than six months to seek help. Mallorca has become an important centre for fertility treatments and many couples come here from abroad specifically with future parenthood in mind.
The Institute de Fertilidad in Palma de Mallorca offers a wide range of tests and treatments, including psychological support. IBI LAB – also in Palma – has 18 years’ experience in this field, with 4,000 babies born as a result of their work. The centres also welcome those prepared to donate eggs and sperm to help infertile couples.

Gynaecology, obstetrics, midwifery
From the moment a baby is conceived – particularly for first-timers – it’s important to find a local medical professional as soon as possible to ensure full pregnancy and childbirth care, and some excellent private services are available. One of the most-renowned gynaecologists/obstetricians on Mallorca is Prof. Dr. Joachim Gnirs, who runs a successful clinic in Bendinat and specialises in high-risk pregnancies. He also attends to patients at Juaneda, Miramar, and Quirón Palmaplanas clinics.
Others include Dr Miguel Terrasa (whose German wife is a midwife), who has his practice in Palma and also attends to patients in private clinics, including Rotger, Miramar, and Quirón Palmaplanas. Dr Paul Raas and Dr Sandra Haitzinger are both based at Palma Clinic, and also attend to inpatients at Clínica Quirón Palmaplanas. There is no district midwifery service on Mallorca and there are childbirth aspects that a foreign mother-to-be will want to be aware of. Angels Nursing Agency offers midwives and antenatal support and, with their wealth of experience on Mallorca, can also advise you on local practices.
Holistic health practitioner Linda Ledwidge, from Scotland – in partnership with Angels Nursing & Babysitting Agency – offers both antenatal and mother-and-baby classes (in English) at Onda Vital Holistic in Palma, using her UK experience as a qualified general nurse and midwife.

There’s nothing more worrying for a parent than a sick child, but it’s good to know that Mallorca is home to excellent paediatric services and paediatricians, who can speak your language. Here we highlight some who practise privately:
Dr Oliver Haak has been a paediatrician on Mallorca since 2002 and is based at the private Palma Clinic (which is open Monday to Friday only). He speaks English, Spanish, and German. His services include: diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases in youngsters from new-borns to adolescents; medical examinations for all ages; allergy testing and de-sensitization; nutritional advice, naturopathy, and phytotherapy. As well as 24-hour emergency calls, he is available on-call for home, hotel, and yacht visits.
Dr Achim Noack studied in Munich and Florence, and came to Mallorca from Germany in 2002. He founded Clínica Picasso, but is now at the new Liberix clinic in Palma. He speaks German, Spanish, and English, and specialises in allergies and respiratory diseases in children.
Dr Karin Rittweiler is based at Centro Médico Porto Pi. Her services include naturopathic treatments such as homeopathy, Bach flower remedies, Schussler Salt Therapy, and kinesiology.
If life has thrown you too many curveballs of late, some help in the form of professional and confidential counselling may become necessary. Sharing worries with an expert counsellor, who is objective and open-minded, can be the route to solving a variety of relationship or family problems, or dealing with a life-threatening disease, too much stress, or an addiction.
Teenagers and children often conceal problems – such as bullying, peer pressure, and struggles with studying – from their parents and, if not addressed, these can lead to issues such as eating disorders or self-harming. Parents often feel helpless to deal with either the problem (if even aware of it) or the resulting behaviour – which is where professional counselling can make a dramatic difference.
Professional counsellors will also be able to recognise when someone needs the help of a medical professional – such as a psychiatrist – and will refer such cases appropriately. Palma Therapy offers counselling in English, German, and Dutch, for children, adolescents, and adults. They also specialise in helping children and adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Home nursing & babysitting
Whether you want an experienced professional to care for an elderly relative with healthcare needs, or a reliable babysitter so that you can enjoy a stress-free night out, you’ll find excellent multilingual services at your disposal on Mallorca. Angels Nursing & Babysitting Agency has been here since 1990 and employs a large number of professional babysitters, highly trained experienced healthcare assistants, and qualified nurses – all with checked references and subject to regular training updates. They provide care and assistance from the beginning to the end of life, and can also provide a multilingual nurse to translate for you at a medical consultation, if needed.
Mediterranean Quality Care Services offers 24-hour nursing in the home or clinic, with the services of qualified nurses, and home help for those requiring it. They have a friendly and supportive diabetic nurse specialist, and can also provide a sleeper service, whereby a nurse settles the patient for the night, sleeps on the premises, and is there to attend to the patient’s needs in the morning. They also offer a comprehensive hire service, for anything from wheelchairs to medication pumps.
