Binissalem is famous for its wine and reserves a fortnight to celebrating the end of the harvesting of the grapes.
What to expect
The Festa des Vermar is a lively fair which takes place during two weeks in September. It sees the town of Binissalem transform with decorations and locals in traditional dress. In fact, if you don’t look like a Mallorcan countryman or woman from the 18th century, you may not be served the typical Fideus de Vermar. This dish is normally made with lamb and served in the open air.
Grape-treading and a grape-throwing battle are a popular element of this fun fiesta. There will also be carnival-style parades, with floats displaying local creativity and homage to the all-important grape. Naturally, there will be wine-tasting and plenty of opportunity to take home a liquid souvenir.
The full programme of events is usually on the municipality website a couple of weeks beforehand.
