A German brother and sister have owned and run the enchanting small restaurant Florian since 1998. Not surprisingly, many of the people who come to this friendly place are Germans, but there’s a welcome for all.
Portocolom is Mallorca’s largest natural harbour and the water is right across the road, so the views alone are worth coming for. The terrace faces the sea and is a relaxing place to gaze at boats or watch passers by. Director’s chairs make comfortable seating, and there’s plenty of shade from the sun.
The cuisine is Mediterranean and includes creative tapas, good quality meat and fish dishes, and all in satisfying portion sizes.
Their starter of baked goat’s cheese with fresh fruits is a popular choice, and the crema Catalana is delicious. Wines are from Spain, including Mallorcan examples.
Indoors, it’s an inviting space, with an attractive dark wood bar, large bowls of fruit, and a regularly changing exhibition of local art on the walls. Tables are close together, enhancing the cosy ambience, and there are plenty of scatter cushions for added comfort and a homely feel. After dark, the ambience is further enhanced by carefully chosen and sited lighting.
There’s a leisurely feel to eating or drinking at Florian – and that’s why so many people are prepared to travel from elsewhere to do so.
