The extensive finca of Galmes i Ribot is nestled in the countryside hills of northern Mallorca. Owner Catalina Ribot´s wine workshop is between the vines. Catalina’s welcome is warm and makes us forget the unpleasant damp winter cold in January.

With shining eyes she talks about what she loves most: her work in the vineyard. “Typical Mallorca” is the motto of Catalina. Wine lovers will taste Mallorca: “My philosophy is an individual project. I want to bring to life varieties that our ancestors grew.” These old vines have influenced the island significantly and it is to Catalina’s credit that she´s brought back to life grapes like Escursac, Argamussa, Batista, Mances de Cabdell, Vinater blanc i callet de C’as Concos. Next year she will build up her own experimental workshop. Very special events at Bodega Galmes i Ribot are the annual wine selections with 40 amateur winemakers.
Every year they create their new favourite under expert guidance of winemaker Julio Torres. A wine-barrel owner even comes from Asia to join this unique event to collaborate in the composition of his wine. Since the impact of the economic crisis, the vinyard has innovated to create bespoke wines. Buyers can now decide how their wine tastes, how the label is designed, and the finished bottles are shipped home for free. What a luxury – and it’s even organic!
Petit Som 2012
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Callet, Fogoneu & Gorgollassa.
Oh, this is the little brother of ‘Som’? This deep, purple red in the glass promises. Blueberries are the most present aroma in the bouquet. On the palate, mineral tones are released, with beautiful rough edges. Long-lasting, interesting finish and aftertaste.
This is not a ‘little brother’. Please eliminate the word ‘Petit’.
50% Merlot, 45% Callet & 5% Fogoneu.
A particular Bordeaux red rotates in the glass. The pure bouquet consists of fruity flavours of ripe plums and figs. Fine herbal flavours are also available. The palate is encased by this balanced cuvée. The intense aftertaste gives the wine its final sharpness.
Amazingly good Mallorcan wine for little money.
