The newest in the Balearics – inaugurated in 2008 – the Son Gual 18-hole championship course in Mallorca was ranked 53rd in Golf World magazine’s Top 100 Golf Courses in Europe 2011 (having moved up from its previous 91st position). Famous golfers, including Ian Woosnam, Sam Torrance and Mark James, have praised the course.
Owned by the Pamer family, it was designed by Thomas Himmel, the German three-time amateur champion, as a championship course. Beautifully landscaped, it has some 800 mature olive trees, waterfalls, wildlife and even grapevines, and Son Gual employs nearly 30 greenkeepers to maintain the pristine condition.
Son Gual has been the venue for the European Senior Open and many private tournaments, organised by companies including Pinmar, Rolex and Son Melià.
Facilities include gardens, a lake, terrace with panoramic views, a wellness and massage area, and Son Gual Golf Academy. The pro shop stocks golfing clothes, accessories and equipment from brands including Bogner, Glenmuir, Backtee, and Duca Del Cosma.
Recent developments include the addition of a roof to the spacious driving range, for all-weather use. Son Gual has also fitted its buggies with a full-colour GPS digital touch screen navigation system, which can be used to complete your scorecard, determine exact distance from the ball to the hole, find out about special offers in the pro shop, contact the course marshal, and even order food and drink!
Their website enables you to take a virtual tour of the facilities and check out the state of the course via a webcam. Son Gual also has its own Facebook page. And as a souvenir of your day’s play here, you can even buy a bottle of Son Gual’s own virgin olive oil from the pro shop or restaurant, housed in the elegant clubhouse.
