There are few hotels on the island that combine genuine five-star luxury with stunning setting quite like the Gran Hotel Son Net. With sweeping panoramic views of the lush mountain landscape impressing from many vantage points, this beautifully converted 17th-century country estate makes a wonderfully peaceful and picturesque retreat.
A grand pastel pink façade stands out against the rich array of surrounding greenery, while inside lofty ceilings, polished flagstone floors, and various historic artefacts imbue the atmosphere with a sense of history. An impressive art collection – featuring works by David Hockey and Marc Chagall – to the air of relaxed sophistication throughout.
The Gran Hotel Son Net is set dramatically on the crest of a hill overlooking the village of Puigpunyent in the island’s northwest region, the backdrop of magnificent Serra de Tramuntana and its pine forests providing a particularly spectacular setting. Despite a feeling of rural remoteness, Palma and its airport can both be reached in less than half an hour by road.
Relax & enjoy
Amongst the beautifully landscaped gardens that surround the former finca is the hotel’s 30-metre swimming pool, lined with private cabanas (rentable by day) that take full advantage of the wonderful countryside views. A second adults-only pool lined with fountains makes for particularly secluded and romantic spot, while further relaxation can be found in the hotel’s wellness centre offering a range of treatments with organic products. There’s also a fitness centre and outdoor yoga sessions can be easily arranged.
The hotel’s 31 rooms are individually styled, marrying traditional touches – beams ceilings, antique pieces, and plush fabrics – with a genuine feeling of luxury. Some fancier rooms include four-poster beds and private terraces with hot tubs – naturally with stunning views – perfect for romancing couples. Others have direct access to semi-private pools, or even your own pool in the Grand Suite Cottage.
As you’d expect from this level of hotel, all the comforts are covered, from complimentary minibar and coffee machines, to sumptuous bathrobes and top-quality bed clothes. Most bathrooms feature separate rainfall showers and soaking tubs, together with premium products as standard.
Eat & drink
A 17th-century olive press, together with exposed stone walls and beamed ceiling, set the mood in Son Net’s main restaurant, Oleum. Here you can dine from a gourmet menu that combines Mallorcan flavours with innovative flourishes and seasonal ingredients. There’s a choice of a la carte or seven-course tasting menus, which can be accompanied with an impressive selection of Mallorcan wines – even some produced from the hotel’s own vineyards.
Only open during the summer, hotel’s second restaurant, Gazebo, offers more casual setting and a menu that mixes up Spanish and international cuisines. It is a wonderful spot to enjoy an alfresco lunch while soaking up views of the Puigpunyent valley from its poolside terrace.
Close to the hotel
Located in the foothills of the Tramuntana, guests are just a short distance from some fabulous hiking trails including those of the Puig de Galatzo Nature Reserve 15 minutes by car. A pleasant 25-minute drive away is, the 400-century La Granja estate, which provides a fascinating insight into the region’s history, while half an hour away is the idyllic village of Valldemossa.

For a genuinely unique experience, private dining can be arranged in the hotel’s tree house, where up to ten people can enjoy an extra special breakfast or lunch, with the best views over the valley.
