The five-star Hotel Formentor is legendary. Built in 1927 by German-Argentinian investor Adán Diehl, it soon became a celebrated venue for international millionaires, patrons, artists and intellectuals. Just think about the names written in the hotel´s guest book: celebrities of the political and movie world such as Charles Chaplin, Winston Churchill, Gary Cooper, John Wayne, Audrey Hepburn and Sir Laurence Olivier spent summer holidays in this chic place.Actor Peter Ustinov came here almost every year to find relaxation. Hosting the convention “Mediterranean Forum” in 2000, with the participation of international politicians like Yassir Arafat (Palestine) and Otto Schily (Germany), the hotel aroused mass media interest worldwide.
The buyer of this month´s abcMallorca luxury property will gain an everlasting privileged view of the historical building in the Cala Pi de la Posada bay. This “bijou bay” is a bayou section of the huge Bahía de Pollensa. Architect Miguel Arenas produced the modernistic Mediterranean villa´s sketches, heralding one of Mallorca´s most amazing private residential construction projects. Every wish has been fulfilled in advance. The chief attraction is that people living in the property can easily look over the whole bay and surroundings – without being discovered or observed by anyone else from outside. “For that to happen, a helicopter would be needed”, Arenas remarks.
The home stands at the edge of the coast. It´s surrounded by a plot of 3,169 square metres, providing privacy and seclusion. In addition to the net living space of 800 square metres, there’s a teak terrace of some further 300 sq m. The villa offers six bedrooms and five separate bathrooms. Broad glass panels let the home´s interior connect with nature and provide sunlight indoors until dusk. Infinity pool and garden area are standard equipment. By foot, it takes ten minutes to get to the nearest beach. Golf players have the courses of Alcanada (www.golf-alcanada.com) and Pollensa (www.golfpollensa.com) at close quarters.
The overriding experience here is of an enormous feeling of freedom. Standing on the terrace, the bay stretches out into the open sea; any possible disturbance from a neighbour is far away, and the dimensions of the property are such that one never feels enclosed or limited. The interior and exterior seem to flow into each other. There´s no construction element creating a sensation of constriction. The garden area blends into the rest of the plot and vice versa.
Architect Miguel Arenas (63) is a real expert in top level residences. For 38 years he has been making dreams come true, using glass, wood and stone. The quiet man with dark grey hair hails from Barcelona. However, after many years living and working in Palma he now feels “Mallorcan”. His work is not limited to Mallorca, though. On Ibiza, in particular, some of his greatest results are situated. “Often we don´t realize how beautiful the Balearic islands are”, he wistfully comments during his Formentor property presentation.
He designs at most three “mansiones” of this kind every year, breaking the price barrier of five million euros considerably. He´s convinced that this house “will set standards even in Formentor”. The visual appearance is minimalist-geometric, approaching the ideas of Bauhaus architectural style – a theme often used for substantial homes on Mallorca.
While the property´s forms seem simple and clear at first sight, the technical fittings applied are astonishing. A pre-installed alarm system looks after security and protection. The lighting installation includes halogen lamps on every ceiling. Thanks to the “Domotic System” the entire lighting is regulated automatically according to time of day and solar radiation. A lava lamp with coloured holograms calms the atmosphere in the living room.
One needn´t add a hi-fi system. Under the surface of the bamboo parquet floor and in the walls there´re ultra-modern loudspeakers installed. “You can´t see them but how you hear them!”, Arenas assures. The sound system provides a unique dimensional tone, taking advantage of the entire interior´s acoustics. Furthermore, warm/cold air conditioning and underfloor heating are part of the basic features.
The residential building has two floors and a cellar. An elevator connects ground and upper floors. The “daytime area” ground floor offers direct access to the terrace and contains living room, dining room, a designer modular kitchen made by Boffi, and a gym with sauna. If the weather brings suffocating heat the inhabitants can take a shower en route walking through the water-curtain at the pool, entering the interior barefoot.
Considered the “night area”, the upper floor contains four bedrooms. The master bedroom has a dressing room and bathroom en suite. The house has a separate two-floor apartment for guests or staff: dining-living room with kitchen on the ground floor and two bedrooms with one bathroom on the first floor.
Who could be the ideal inhabitants of this temple of indulgence? “A family with grandparents and children could use it comfortably as a summer hideaway”, Arenas guesses. The tranquil estate is also imaginable as an oasis of inspiration for an artist or a writer. A global travelling businessman could use the property as a “mental filling station” together with his friends or his family.
