Its romantic and exclusive location, amid citrus and olive groves, has attracted the rich and famous to this Orient-Express boutique property in the dreamy village of Deià. Princess Diana was once a guest, and singer Robbie Williams and his fiancée came to stay before their wedding.
The hotel – once owned by Sir Richard Branson – has 67 individually designed rooms, including suites, as well as a separate deluxe self-catering villa close by. There’s a choice of restaurants: fine dining, by candlelight, in El Olivo (with its award-winning wine list), or the more informal Son Moragues bistro/bar with terrace.
In summer, the poolside Safereix bar and restaurant offers light meals such as salads and home-made pizzas. Facilities include: La Residencia spa, with indoor pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, gym and treatment rooms); two outdoor pools; two tennis courts (with resident pro); boutique, two art galleries, and one of Spain’s largest permanent sculpture gardens.
About Belmond La Residencia Hotel & Spa
La Residencia is situated in the charming coastal and mountain village of Deià: a village once home to Robert Graves and also been the chosen residence of a number of writers and artists.
The village boasts spectacular views of both mountains and sea. La Residencia shares these views and visitors can relax here and feel truly far away from the stress of city life.
La Residencia is an inspired synthesis of informal elegance and romantic seclusion. The hotel has a dramatic backdrop of an amphitheatre of lofty mountain crags and offers a stunning panorama over the blue Mediterranean below. The hotel consists of several buildings: a late XIV century watchtower, two manor houses –Son Canals and Son Moragues- whose earliest written records date from XVI century although Son Canals, attached to the watchtower is the oldest of the two and is thought to have been built in XV century; Son Fony, dating from XVIII century and Son Fony II, a XX century construction in a design totally in keeping with the other three. These buildings were first converted into a hotel in 1984, maintaining as many original features as possible.
The Tramuntana suites were built in 2007 and occupy a high position with wonderful views. The hotel is now totally owned by Orient-Express Hotels. All interiors and exteriors of the hotel are in traditional Mallorcan architectural style with furnishings and fittings of great beauty. Much of the furniture consists of antique pieces, many of these from Mallorca, which blend in with the surroundings and add charm to the building.
In the gardens, note the dry stonewalls -a local handicraft that continues to be used on the island. Throughout the hotel, visitors can admire a wonderful art collection -all work of local artists. Art exhibitions are held in hotel’s Sa Tafona gallery throughout the entire year. Additionally, the hotel has a resident artist and a resident sculptor. Both offer master classes. Our sculptor, Juan Waelder, is also the curator of our Sculpture Garden. A stroll through the grounds reveals a number of sculptors by diverse artists, some local and others international. A local ceramist also provides classes to guests.
At regular intervals, classical music concerts are also held in La Residencia, for the hotel boasts possession of a very special and unique Steinway piano dating from 1887. This piano, which had lain in disuse for many years, was purchased by the hotel, fully restored, and re-inaugurated on September 18, 1987, exactly one hundred years after the famous Spanish composer, Albéniz had first inaugurated the instrument. This time, the honour was given to the prize-winning British pianist, Jonathan Plowright, who included several works by Albéniz in his programme.
The El Olivo restaurant occupies what was once the Son Moragues olive press. The press is still preserved. The restaurant is renowned as one of the best in Spain. The Café Miró restaurant offers a selection of tasty ‘tapas’ and local Mediterranean cuisine. Its casual atmosphere is a real alternative to El Olivo. Here, afternoon teas and ‘meriendas’ are served and in summer months the Garden Lounge bar opens where relaxing cocktails can be taken in the evenings. Fresh flowers and fruit are placed in all rooms each day. The hotel has two cushion-floor, floodlit tennis courts in a truly magnificent setting with a backdrop of mountains and sea.
The hotel’s resident tennis coach is available to help beginners and advanced players alike. He is sure to improve your style. The tennis centre also has a pro-shop and a covered table-tennis area. The wonderful award-winning Spa offers guests a wide range of treatments, including relaxing therapies, massage, facials, signature treatments, alternative therapies and general body pampering. Guests also have the use of an outdoor Jacuzzi with spectacular views over sea and mountains, a sauna, a steam room, a fully-equipped gymnasium, and an indoor pool. Many guests are golfers who take advantage of Mallorca’s 20 golf courses to practice their sport. The hotel can reserve these for clients.
La Residencia has 14 hectares of rustic land with olive groves whose fruit produces our extra virgin olive oil. Also on the mountainside is our mountain refuge where we serve a traditional Mallorcan picnic to guests who take our donkey trail. The spectacular views from the path on the trail are in themselves a reason to book this excursion. The hotel provides guests an opportunity to participate in many activities whatever time of year.
