The Asian restaurant opened in June 2017 to great reviews and genuine delight. The well-known and respected chef, Gunnar Blishcke, who was most recently the head chef at coast by east and Sansibar in Port Adriano for four and a half years, decided to open Katagi Blau in this unique setting.
The décor is a talking point for the hotel in general and for this rooftop restaurant in particular. The uninterrupted views across the bay of Palma create a feeling of privilege while enjoying lunch or dinner. Guests of the restaurant can utilise the underground parking and take the lift directly to the 7th floor. The outdoor terrace has a small pool surrounded by comfortable armchairs and low tables. Inside, the walls are blue and the space is decorated with hanging ceiling plants, comfortable linen covered chairs and wooden tables.
The gastronomic concept of Katagi Blau is to create Asian dishes with local Mallorcan ingredients. We visited for lunch and tried a mixed sushi roll filled with tempura asparagus, salmon, tuna, and sea bass topped with puréed avocado and dressed with a soya reduction and crème fraiche sauce. The taste was fresh and light, but the roll was slightly too big to manage in one bite. Next we had the sea bass sashimi served in hot olive oil with lots of Asian spices. The finger-licking caramelised duck and soft taco with plum sauce and peanuts went down a treat.
Gunnar, the owner and chef, began cooking at age 18 and gained his initial culinary experience working with the famous German TV chef, Steffan Henssler, after which he travelled to Tokyo to work in Restaurant Miyoka which was recognised as the third best sushi restaurant in the world. He joined East Hotel Group in Hamburg and moved to Mallorca in 2012 to run the kitchen for their two well-known restaurants in the super yacht harbour of Port Adriano.
Katagi Blau hosts regular sunset evenings with DJ, a special tasting menu including drinks for a fixed price.
Why eat here?
The sea views are stunning. The décor is cool, relaxed and right on trend. If you like fresh, flavourful and creative Asian food you will love Katagai Blau, but it is a bit pricey.
