The traditional melon fair takes place over a weekend in Vilafranca de Bonany. Everything you can do with a melon – from competitive melon-eating to sports with a melon – takes place at this refreshing summer event.
What to expect
The main action takes place on the weekend of 5th and 6th September, although there will be some activities in the week running up to it. A melon-lantern festival is one of the annual highlights. There is also always an evening market where visitors can peruse local produce as well as Art exhibits.
On Saturday the evening party kicks off with a devilish firework display known as a ‘correfoc’, which is always followed by open air concerts with local talent. Sunday is generally reserved for competitions for the largest and best quality melon. And if that wasn’t entertaining enough, there are the MiniMelonOlympics, which transform the popular summer fruit into a piece of essential sports equipment.
