Housed in a beautiful authentic old windmill, this popular restaurant is located on the outskirts of the central island town of Santa Maria del Camί. The restaurant is a family affair run by the Himberts. Chef Peter Himbert is in charge of the kitchen, while his wife, Herta, offers a warm welcome at front of house. The cuisine is Mediterranean, but also demonstrates the strong influence of Peter Himbert’s German roots, and unsurprisingly, the restaurant is a firm favourite with German visitors and residents.
There are a few different levels to the restaurant and about four or five intimate dining rooms within the stone mill. A charming patio provides an idyllic setting in summer, with mature trees providing welcome shade. Run by a family and family-friendly; children are welcome here and encouraged to have fun playing in the garden or in the small playground within the large parking area.
A set menu is adapted on a daily basis, using available seasonal ingredients. The dishes are generous in size and artfully presented. A tasty sweet potato and chorizo soup, a beef tartar or baked goats cheese with black olive tapenade might be a starter; while mains might be some freshly grilled hake, a tender veal fillet or perhaps some perfectly seasoned venison with cherries and bacon wrapped gnocchi. Expect some firm German favourites, such as their delicious apple strudel with ice cream. Due to the style of the cuisine and the location, the Molí de Torrent tends to be even more popular in winter.
The area around Santa Maria del Camί is famed for its bodegas, which produce excellent quality wines and liqueurs; the wine list includes these local varieties as well as a discerning selection from the mainland. For a refreshing German beer, they have Dom Kölsch on tap. Indeed, passersby are often tempted to stop just for a drink because of the attractive location. With attentive staff who anticipate their customers’ needs and consistently high standards of cuisine, Molί des Torrents is an all-round good choice for either lunch or supper.
