About Nau Escola
Nau is an official nursery and primary school in Palma that works with an innovative methodology based on emotional accompaniment and living, active pedagogy. It is the first alternative school that has been officially recognised by the Department of Education and Culture of the Balearic Islands. With six years of experience and a highly qualified teaching team in the educational, humanistic, psychological and artistic fields, the students’ well-being is the top priority.
The curriculum at Nau is made up of ‘environments’ which are spaces where educational resources are organised, designed and arranged in such a way as to stimulate meaningful learning experiences for the students. Activities are proposed where the child builds his or her own learning experience. The aim is to encourage autonomy, responsibility and interaction with their classmates to create a shared learning experience,
Each child decides what they should devote their time to and with what material to interact with as their classmates observe and can join in by presenting different materials and suggesting other possible manipulations and combinations.
The ‘environments’ are constantly reviewed and evaluated which makes them more like living, dynamic spaces that change as children, their interests and their needs change.
Why choose Nau?
Nau uses a model of living, active and creative pedagogy which is an educational methodology that allows children to open up to the experience of learning. The teachers not only teach but also help the children to manage their emotions which is much easier to do in the small classes of 9-12 students.
Nau encourages children to be children, to feel free of restrictive educational structure and embrace creativity and independence.
As Emmi Pikler, the famous Hungarian paediatrician put it “The essential thing is that the child discovers things for himself. Everyone who learns through their own experience will have a very different knowledge from the one he gets when the answers are given to him”.
