One of Mallorca’s disused cinemas – the Cine Fantasio in Sóller – looks set to have a new lease of life as a cultural centre for the town. The old building was previously earmarked to become a music school but renovation costs proved too high. Several years ago Sóller council signed an agreement with the former Sa Talaia hotel owners, who made a donation of 800,000 euros, for cultural infrastructure projects.
Following recent inspections by council engineers, it is expected that renovation will proceed, resulting in a 400-seat cultural centre with an extended stage for theatre, concerts and movie screenings. Cine Fantasio opened in 1935 and was refurbished in 1954, finally closing its doors in 1981 .
