The gastronomic scene on Mallorca has never been as exciting as it has been for the past couple of years. Not only does the island have nine restaurants for 2017 with Michelin stars – including one with two stars – but there are also exciting new places that are re-setting benchmarks in terms of cuisine, service, and décor. Others have made positive changes to attract today’s more discerning diners. All of these factors are making Mallorca an increasingly appealing destination for foodies.
In our bid to showcase the hottest new places opened in 2015 and 2016, we visited, ate, and enjoyed. If you’re looking for a great restaurant to visit in 2017, we hope you’ll enjoy them too . . .
Whichever of these eateries you try, we recommend accompanying your meal with a bottle of wine produced on Mallorca. With more than 70 wineries here, you should find plenty of their good wines on offer in the better-quality restaurants. For a guide to some to watch out for, see abcMallorca’s guide to the ‘101 Best Wines of Mallorca’. And if you want to find even more restaurants to visit on Mallorca this year, our Restaurant section is essential visiting. Our special editions are available for sale in kiosks, through Amazon, or read the abcMallorca magazine online here.
Arrels by Marga Coll
The 5-star Gran Meliá de Mar hotel in Illetas opened new restaurant Arrels by Marga Coll (the renowned Mallorcan chef who owns the restaurant Miceli in Selva) in 2015, showcasing the best of Mallorcan gourmet cuisine, with a contemporary touch. Dine indoors or alfresco on a lovely terrace with Mediterranean views or, for added romance, on the hotel’s private beach. This is a good restaurant to try famous island products such as ‘xeixa’ wheat bread rolls, Treuer olive oil, ‘flor de sal’ salt, and a wide selection of Majorcan wine, in beautiful surroundings with a sea view. In 2016, Arrels by Marga Coll introduced a two-hour breakfast, which should be reserved before 14:00h the day before you wish to go.

The restaurant scene in the bohemian district of Santa Catalina can be quite transient, but Nuru looks set to stay. Its name is Swahili for ‘light, vitality, and new beginnings’. Contemporary décor (including original art by Spanish Hollywood actor Jordí Mollá), a relaxed ambience, and excellent service are only part of the story. Dine on the ground floor, or upstairs, with adjacent alfresco chill-out terrace. The flavourful contemporary fusion food – made from high-quality fresh seasonal ingredients – outshines that of many other Palma restaurants. Starters are designed for sharing, adding to the intimate ambience. Leave room for the delicious desserts!

A ‘chiringuito’ or beach bar that punches above its weight, Ponderosa Beach is one of several eateries on the long sandy Playa de Muro, on the Bay of Alcúdia. This is a cool place to kick off your shoes and bury your feet in the sand beneath your white table, while you enjoy a leisurely lunch and drink with gorgeous views.
