On a sweet warm evening in May, two of Palma’s prettiest women were ensconced in a special place on a corner of Costa d’en Brossa, busy with the joyful ritual of making themselves ball-ready. The event was the Rana Foundation’s annual gala party, and the women were Patricia Román and Sandra Torrero.
Nook Beauty Concept
A top international model and an illustrious hair stylist and make-up artist, the firm friends form a power duo who, at the start of 2016, opened a unique spa boutique in the heart of the city.
Sandra and Patricia stepped out in high spirits from Nook that night – their personal luxury salon-cum-dressing room for a happy couple of hours – radiant in Great Gatsby-themed dress, skipping off to enjoy the sparkling gala. With all the best tools of the trade at their disposal, combined with years of professional experience, it was natural that the two should look and feel gorgeous. Any girl who has ever seen an image of a model backstage at a fashion show having her hair and make-up done using top-notch, insider products and wondered what she could look like if given the same treatment, now in Palma can find out.
Besides sourcing the crème of certified organic beauty goodies – carefully selected for performance and feel-good factor – Sandra and Patricia work their magic on the hair, skin and nails of ordinary men and women who visit the adorable premises in a privileged setting just off Plaça del Mercat.
Both stars in their fields, the green goddesses have worked with – and continue to work with – a lengthy list of revered names including Ellen von Unwerth, Mario Sorrenti, Jörg Heinz and Gavin O’Neill.
A self-confessed cosmetic addict – “I’m a make-up and skin-product freak” – Patricia uses her frequent model travels to scout for potential beauty lines. In order to make the grade, brands must carry the Ecocert label and always, always, be cruelty free.
Regarding the move to all things ecological, Patricia believes “there’s a big gap between the north of Europe and Spain, but change is coming. People need to be concerned that they take care of themselves from inside, as well as outside… a lot of people don’t know what they’re putting on their own skin. So many things are full of petrochemicals.”
Patricia is living proof that switching to a more mindful lifestyle works wonders for skin, hair and personal wellbeing. “Every morning, I use the energising body oil from Karmamenju, and the lavender and chamomile version in the evening to wind down,” she says.
What are Patricia’s own can’t-live-without potions?
“Molecule No 8 fragrance by Zarkoperfume, Rudolph Care Sun Face cream SPF 50 – I use it all year round – and Ocean Mist by Sacha Juan on my hair, for that beachy, wavy surf look.” A certified chiromassage therapist, Patricia takes a hands-on approach to treating clients, while Sandra puts her 20 years of skill in hair and make up to work on brides and those wishing for something above the standard salon service.
A labour of love, the former herboristería underwent a total transformation to emerge, swan like, as the modern apothecary-feel gem it is today, complete with a handful of wooden installations and furniture made by Patricia’s husband, who was instrumental in planning the design. The result is pared back yet feminine, a pink-and-white space inviting the girl who enters to experience personalised attention and gain valuable nuggets of advice.
Sure, there are niche organic beauty stores; just as there are A-list make-up and hair gurus, and blogs penned by successful models offering up tips. To have all of these elements combined in one chic package feels as fresh as a spritz of the grapefruit face mist sitting prettily on its shelves.
