A parent’s sense of frustration led to the founding of the privately owned Palma College. Businesswoman Jill Witkamp’s experience was common amongst parents of teenagers: even with renowned international schools here A-level subject choice was limited.
“It meant that we had to take the difficult decision to send our daughters to a UK Sixth-Form College offering the subjects they wanted.”
Mallorca’s lack of an International College dedicated to Sixth Form Studies inspired Jill to take the challenging decision to establish one herself. Her business partner and Head Teacher Ali Lawrence had taught at one of Scotland’s best-performing independent schools, particularly in the target age group. Palma College – a modern alternative to the island’s prevailing style of academia – welcomed its first students in September 2013.
Sixth-formers of 22 nationalities today study in Palma College’s distinctive old-palace setting, where 14 fully qualified staff members currently teach 13 A-level subjects. These include the popular Arts subjects: Drama, Art and English Literature; Sciences including Psychology, Maths and four Modern Languages. The teachers share Jill and Ali’s values and vision of contemporary education for this specific age group. They focus on preparing each student to be the best they can be.
Palma College looks for open-minded, outward-looking students, who become its ambassadors. Through the unique Enrichment Programme, they learn responsibility, gain practical life skills and develop personal values – such as self-esteem, acceptance, respect, and kindness; all invaluable for a successful future life.
Former student Amelia – now studying for a BA in Photography at the University of Gloucester, UK agrees with their philosophy “Not only do you learn academically, you also learn a lot about who you are.”
90% of students to date have gained their first-choice university place, but not all young people want that academic pathway. Palma College staff works with parents and students to find suitable pathways best suited to career ambitions having already equipped them with transferrable skills. “We are partially student-led and evolve to meet their needs in the modern world,” agrees Ali Lawrence. Palma College is an acknowledged centre of excellence for Education and Skills for Life as well as A-level choice.
