Opened in 2004 in a converted 17th-century palaccio, Purohotel Palma was the first boutique hotel to open in the Mallorcan capital – and it remains a benchmark amongst the dozens that now exist. The key to its success has always been its savvy combination of boho-chic and cool Balearic vibe, which has continued to attract the more urbane traveller and trendier elements of Palma society.
The hotel is located just off Carrer del Apuntadors, one of central Palma’s busier narrow lanes in its charming and historic La Lonja neighbourhood. Wandering around the surrounding labyrinthine streets is the best way to discover the city, emerging on the nearby leafy promenade of Passeig del Born or one of Palma’s many pleasant squares.

Relax & enjoy
Much of Puro Hotel is geared around its buzzing social spaces, but for those looking for some more solitary downtime, the private wing includes a small spa with sauna, hammam, and range of treatments. Upstairs in the same block is a terrace with large mosaic-lined whirlpool tub. Back in the main building, the hotel’s swish rooftop terrace has a small plunge pool and Bali beds, where guests can enjoy kick back, relax and enjoy the Puro vibe.
The hotel has 51 rooms in all, 40 in the main building and 11 in the private wing. Decor falls into one of two styles; the first is finished in dark exotic wood, with chunky modern furnishings, and stylishly brooding vibe; the second is more Mediterranean in look and feel, with a brighter palette and lightwood floors. Leather details and genuine wood add to the feeling of quality across all rooms.
Bathrooms are similarly upscale, with walk-in showers and Molten Brown toiletries (upgraded rooms add thick bathrobes and separate soaking tubs). State-of-the-art Bose music and movie systems complete rooms you can really lounge and luxuriate in.
Eat & drink
Inspired by fifties New York, the hotel’s Beatnik Bar & Restaurant offers an eclectic mix of cuisines from around the world, incorporating local and sustainable ingredients. Surrounds are chic and striking, especially in the hotel’s hip and cosmopolitan bar that has always been a magnet for Mallorca’s fashionable crowd. Up on the rooftop terrace, the hip vibes continue with chilled-out DJ sets and sunset cocktails setting the mood. Up here, the ‘tower’ also offers a private dining spot with 360-degree views over Palma.
Close to the hotel
As well as being just steps from various local bars and eateries, Puro Hotel is also within easy walking distance the capital’s main historic attractions, with the likes of La Almudaina and La Seu cathedral just five minutes on foot. Palma’s main square is a 10-minute walk, while the trendy neighbourhood and nightlife of Santa Catalina is about the same in the other direction. A 20-minute stroll along the seafront also takes you to the city’s sandy Can Pere Antoni beach.
Good to know
The hotel offers a complimentary shuttle to its beach club, Puro Beach Palma, just 10 minutes along the coast, where free sunbeds can be reserved in advance (alternatively guests get a discount at Puro Beach Illetas).
